Push the button....lock pops up....WHY?
Well like the title says, the passenger door wont stay locked. If I push down the lock knob and shut the door, it pops up as it closes. The driver door does that as well. However even if you lock it with the key, you can push the button on the door handle and the lock pops up. I have not taken the door apart yet, so I thought I would see if anyone here has ever had the same thing. Thanks in advance.

my truck has been that way from the factory, lock it with the key from the outside or lock it from the inside with the door shut, smart bc you wont ever lock your keys in the truck....

Thats the way every one I have ever owned works, frustrating yes, but like the above poster said it keeps you from locking yourself out.

If it's locked and you push the button on the exterior handle it unlocks? Or did I just read that wrong. My 72, until I just shaved it, the only way to lock it was to use the key or press the knob inside, closing it after locking would unlock it.

Re: Push the button....lock pops up....WHY?
That's they way it is with these trucks and many other vehicles from the 50's, 60's and early 70's but like the others here have already mentioned, it's a great preventative from locking your keys in the vehicle. But I too am confused by your statement wherein you say you lock the door from the outside with the key then depress the button on the door handle and the lock pop's up? I have never seen that happen unless the lock is not fully engaged/depressed when you lock it with your key from the outside.

Re: Push the button....lock pops up....WHY?
Hey, you could always do what I did and just remove the inside and outside handles... then you don't need the lock
To be honest, half the reason I did it was because I hated having to walk around to lock both doors or strain my back to reach the passenger door from the inside Trip |

Re: Push the button....lock pops up....WHY?
Well, you are describing two different things.
For all 67-72 trucks, you have to lock the door with a key as it will pop up (unlock) when you shut the door. Now, for the problem when your door is shut and locked and you push the button(outside) to open the door, it pops the lock up. this can be fixed by readjusting the stiker plate. What is happening is that your door is not shut all of the way and your lock is not properly locked. (most likely due to age and wear) Try moving your catch plate (on cab) outward towards the door just a tiny bit at a time to see if that helps. Last edited by John Fabris; 04-07-2010 at 06:09 PM. |

Can you not hold the button in lock the door and while holding the button in shut the door? I dont really use door locks so i have never payed much attention to this.

Its in the owners manual, only way to lock the doors are with the key, and from the inside. As stated above it helps you from locking up your keys, I actually like it......Never have to call a locksmith with these trucks..... Smitty

I've seen some do this when the door latch/lock mechanism is dry too. Might try hitting them with some lubricant/lithium grease.

Re: Push the button....lock pops up....WHY?
My 72 and 67 both would stay locked if you hold the door button in after pushing the lock down and shutting the door. All my 50s and 60s chevys worked this way and also my 64 dodge. You guys are just too young LOL. Oh also my 70 chevy impala.

Re: Push the button....lock pops up....WHY?
Ok thanks for the info. And yes I guess that I did describe two things. The only locking with the key is fine with me (shut the door lock pops up). But the "problem" is that the lock can be unlocked by pressing the door open button on the handle. I will move the door striker and see if that helps(thanks john). The P.O has had this poor truck all jacked up for the last few years and with alittle help and alot of work she will be as good as new. By the way... did I mention I love this board...never have come up short on help, even the small stuff. Thanks guys.

No sweat, I was thinking that everyone else in this thread has ADD as they did not get the fact that you talked about after the door is shut and locked, and pressing the button unlockes the door.
