a new oops.

tonight i was delivering pizza and was going about thirty and hit a spot in the road where it was somewhat bumby as i was coming up to an intersection. i came to a stop and when i went to take off my truck revved up and just started to roll down into the intersection. i got on the brakes. tried reverse, no luck. i step on the ebrake, get out, lock the hubs in, stick it in neutral, and then 4 hi and try to back up, i just start to roll forward again. i stop, get out, unlock hubs, stick it back in two high and try shifting through all the gears from park to first and back up about three times. as im about to give up and im putting in park, i feel it catch reverse and so i back out of the intersection. i park look underneath and nothing looked out of place. i decided to call someone in to cover my shift and go home. in the drive way i get underneath and nothing still looks out of place. my dad comes out and shifts through the gears for me. the shift linkage instead of rotating on a direct point (frame side) slightly rotates as if on an axis. it makes a half circle. outside of that everything is fine now. what the heck? all fluids are good. any ideas?

Re: a new oops.

so, i decided to do a transmission flush because my transfer is fine. i was thinking maybe a valve, ball, or clutch pack was stuck. the oil was brown like brand new engine oil and had no viscosity. however it didnt smell burnt and it was tranny fluid.

and then a tad bit of shop fun.

now my tranny shifts perfectly smooth and has no growl. hoping this solved all my problems.

Re: a new oops.

Yo! Brown? Not red, like ATF?
Still sounds like a tranny shift linkage problem that resolved itself,...watch for problems at the next bumpy spot.
Todd.

yeah, i flushed it so its all red now but im starting to wonder if the PO had stuck the wrong fluid in and there was just enough old to make it smell like atf. examined the shift linkage and it all looks great.
