Gas Tank in frame - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I bought a special built tank from TEBOW in Florida to go in the 62 C-10 frame and it is 10" deep by 8" and I am a little confused by the different hook ups. I looked up sending units at Summit Racing and others and they seem to match the hole on the top of the tank. I also have a threaded hole in the bottom front for a fuel fitting. The sending units I have looked at seem to draw the gas from the top of the sending unit and a 3/8 tube. What is the hole in the bottom for if the fuel is drawn from the sending unit. Or is there a sending unit that is for the gage only and the engine fuel pump just draws it straight from the hole in the bottom front.

I hope I am being clear with my question. Also does anyone recommend a sending unit for my application.

I'm not familar with that brand of tank, but most aftermarket tanks like that use a sending unit that doesnot have the integrated fuel pickup line In which case you would use either a port that is low on the tank, or one on the top only if it has a pickup tube going to the bottom. If you could post a pic of the tank we might be able to help better.

Perhaps the one on the bottom is a drain?

I was always told you never want a bottom mounted fuel pickup on a street driven vehicle 'cause it will suck any dirt into the fuel line.

A bottom drain on a fuel tank could prove to be very handy

As the others mentioned, a photo of your tank will help. Many of these tanks use a universal tube-type sending unit that is often made for fuel cells - you just have to get the unit that is close to the depth of your tank (they come in different lengths). While these units do not have a fuel pick up provision, the tank maker might have a part number for a conventional sending unit with a fuel pick up for a mechanical fuel pump application. Generally, the bottom threaded port you mentioned is used for the fuel pick up in a electric fuel pump application.

It sounds like your tank is set up for a sending unit like the one tommy posted in the summit link and the fitting in the bottom is the actual fuel feed to the pump.

I think the one that has been listed from summit fits the bill. I would assume that it is suitable for the 10" depth. I am also assuming that it sits on the bottom and measures the resistance as it uses fuel or adds fuel.
