Need Help with Lifted 86 - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I ended up with a 86 shortbed 4x4 in a trade. It has a 6" lift and transfer case for 700r4. i'm new to 4x4's so here is my problem. the rear has 4 inch blocks. What did they do to raise it another 2" In the front, what did they do to get the 6" lift. I ask these question because I believe I want to bring it down some. i'm thinking i would prefer a 2" lift. How can i accomplish this, remove the blocks in the rear and do what to the front. also, will anything else need changed out, when you lift does driveshafts change. what could this person possibly done. it currently has no motor or trans in it now. thanks for help and advice!! tim

There are several possibilities of what they did to raise the front, but the best (and correct) way is to replace the spring pack. To return your truck to stock you should be able to take out the rear blocks and replace the front springs with stock springs. I have seen blocks and shackles used on the front before, but thankfully it is not often that people comprimise safety. You do need to check the pitman arm to see if the put on a raised pitman arm to correct the steering geometry. The driveshafts couls still be stock, most people try to avoid the expense of custom shafts, but you would have to measure to be sure.

Just wondering,did you see the ride height before they pulled the motor??
Without everything together it might be tough to judge the correct height

Yea I was gonna ask that as well. Depends on how they lifted it could be 6" front and back just with 4" blocks and then 2" with springs.

Blocks are usually limited to 4" so I agree that they "might" have used 2" springs and blocks with 6" spring in the front. How do you know it has a 6" lift?

New springs in the front for sure will be needed, you can try to remove the blocks as well and see how it sits with an engine in it... You should just buy a new kit online that will come with U-bolts, shocks and springs...
