Re: cold air intake
I don't know about best, but I really like the GM Performance parts cold air intake for these trucks. I work at a dealer and my cost was like 300.00. I got on ebay and picked up one used with few scratches for 150.00 shipped. Recently scored a almost perfect new chrome lid for it at work on partial kit that was getting scrapped. Looks great and sonds good and seems to help throttle response.

Re: cold air intake
I have a K&N FIPK cold air intake on my 02 Z71 w/ the 5.3l. I got it off ebay from autopartswharehouse brand new for $200 shipped. Cheapest price I could find on K&N at the time. I like it, it gives me a little better throttle response. I haven't seen much of an increase in mpg with the intake.
I dont have a throttle body spacer so I can't say from personal experience, but I have read on this forum that they dont make much of a difference in performance on these trucks.

Re: cold air intake
i had a drop in k&n and traded my whole setup for a k&n FIPK because the guy didnt like the open filter since he used his truck in the mud/water. i can tell you i didnt notice any difference between the two.
i get around 18mpg maybe with 4.10s, quite magnaflow and the cold air. |

Re: cold air intake
Could you maybe document the gain if any? I have heard time and again these don't add anything to the mix other than sound and would really like to know if that's true. I don't want to add one as I am keeping this one stock.....just curious.

Re: cold air intake
My K&N 57 series FIPK came with a dyno sheet in the box for the 5.3l showing a 9.11 HP gain @ 5352 rpm. I have never had my truck on a dyno so I can't say if thats true or not.

Re: cold air intake
I went with a Volant, simply because it is enclosed from engine bay heat, and it comes with a donaldson Powecore dry element filter. No more oiling, and great performance for very low maintenance. Works great. Other than that, yeah, fairly minimal gains for the amount of money some of these companies are asking, like banks and others... Starts to get ridiculous.
I have never experienced it with any K&N product I've run in the past, but some have said over oiling can contaminate your MAF sensor... And don't bother with the Throttle body spacer on your GenII engine. It has absolutely no effect since your fuel/air mixture does not occur until past the where the TB spacer would go anyway. Completely pointless and all hype. Works on carb'ed and TBI set-ups, but not these engines.
