Score!! Tilt column

I did some "horse trading" and got a column for my '69. I'll have to do a little work, like replacing the missing shifter indicator/pointer (screw is there) as well as the missing neutral safety switch (no biggee), but I also will have to replace the wiring ass'y that includes the connector. I understand that the tilt column also includes a light for the shifter indicator. My stock, non-tilt column indicator didn't light up, but I assumed it was because the bulb was bad...not knowing that it may not have been illuminated at all. Never was an issue.

So, now I have to go to work refurbishing the tilt column. The tilt works, though.

Yeah, I'm bragging.....

Re: Score!! Tilt column

congrats let me know if you find a good place to get parts..in my tilt the white plastic piece that slides in and out of the column and hooks to the indicator is broken and I need a new one

If you need the adapter to convert your flat wiring to the horse shoe one the part # is 1894851 and you can get it a a dealer for like $10

Re: Score!! Tilt column

The old needle in your original steering column was lit up from a light in your dash. The light had a fiber optic cable that ran from the bulb to your pointer. The tilt columns have a little light bulb in the column itself. That would be the gray wire coming out of the column. The turnsignal switch wires should be the same as the one in your non tilt column, with a half moon plug. If it were changed sometime from the previouse owner and it has the flat plug, it is because it has a lator model year turn signal switch. Easy fix though. Just take a small flat blade screw driver and remove the pins from both of the plastic plugs. Then repin the curved one with the tilt column's wires. WES
BTW, We cary the pointers for the tilts. I should say that we have them on order, because we resently sold out.

Re: Score!! Tilt column

I took some photos, but it will be later today before I can post them. I verified that the tilt mechanism still works. It doesn't seem to have any looseness in it, as do some that I have seen and used. The steering wheel on it is from a GMC, and is probably original to the column. The top of the collar, at the top of the column next to the tilting parts, is a little fuzzy/corroded, if you understand. So, a round of detail work is gonna be needed. The shifter handle has some speckles of rust on it. I was told that the tilt column shifter handles are different in comparison to the non-tilt shifter handles.

So, Wes, thanks for the note and I'm sure we'll be in touch. Is the wiring ass'y available? I know I'm gonna need that for sure. One of the eight wires in the harness is fried, fricasseed....toast. I don't know what it went to....yet.

Re: Score!! Tilt column

You are right about the tilt column shift levers. They are different than the non-tilt. I have a couple of pretty nice used ones removed from a van that are shorter than the truck ones. Guys like them because they don't stick out past some of the smaller aftermarket steering wheels.
The wiring is not sold seperate from the new turnsignal switches. The light socket and wire are all a part of the switch also. So if you purchase a new switch, it will all be new. Even the plug that plugs into the fuse panel for the light will be supplied. By the way, our switches have the original red 4 way flasher button too, unlike some of the others out there. WES

Re: Score!! Tilt column

thats the same col. I started with... the install was easy.....If you push it in to add room you dont even need to move the safty switch..it makes for a great combo tilt and 2 1/2" in make for lots of room..

Re: Score!! Tilt column

That is not the same column. Hottrucks, you have a van column and ChevLoRay you have a truck column. The rectangular hole in ChevLoRay's column is the near the bottom. His column also has a shorter steering shaft. It looks like a new turnsignal switch, shift indicator housing, indicator lens, and pointer are in order though. WES
