Cooling issues

Info: 85, 305 w/performer intake, holley 600 carb, accel hei with accel super coil, accel plug wires, headers and flowmasters, 350 trans with an above stock stall. Finally fixed the fuel delivery problem and I maintain a constant 5-6 psi, no more, no less. Truck drives and rides great with one exception.

Problem: I drove the truck a short distance and it starts to overheat once it gets up to operating temp. I replaced the water pump and the same problem is there. How can I check the radiator? What do I need to look at so I can fix this problem.

It feels so good to finally drive the truck, so please help me fix this!!!

Re: Cooling issues

ck the thermostat or just put a new 1 in it, if that doesnt fix it, take regular granule cascade and water and flush the cooling system, but if you have a blow gun make sure air is passing through the rad and make sure the fan is working this would be where i would start first before you start throwing parts at it or flush the rad. hope this helps.

Re: Cooling issues

exact same thing happened to me, it ended up being an air pocket in my coolant. be sure to completly burp the system after you hook all your hoses back up. just fill it with water, leave the cap off, and let it idle. the temp will raise a litlle and the level of the coolant will come up, and start overflowing. just let it keep idleing and spilling out till a bunch of air rushes out and the level goes down. this may take a couple minits. then very slowly top back off your coolant. if need be, do it again. i had to do this to mine twice before i got all the air out. it will seem like its just going to keep spilling and spilling, but let it go. when the air rushes out, you will know it and the coolant level will drop a few inches.

Re: Cooling issues

Went through this topic myself recently. Drove me nuts for a week! Replaced everything but the water pump!

Here is the link:
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s....php?p=3878620

Been running perfect and indicates on the guage everything works properly since I replaced the gauge with a mechanical aftermarket one.

Also purchased an infrared thermometer, Harbor Freight was $30, Advanced Auto had them on sale for $60...it would have saved me a lot of time and grief if I had just done that in the first place. A good diagnostic tool to have around.

Good Luck,
Mark

Re: Cooling issues

Does it have AC? Not that this in and of itself is a problem, BUT, the space between the rad and condensor is. I had a truck do this and went thru all the tests and checks and couldn't find a problem. Finally, I decided to pull the rad for a flush and the front of the rad was covered with what looked like a carpet made of leafe debris and pine needles. Cleaned all this out and viola, it ran cool. Just a thought, Jim

Re: Cooling issues

I did the whole air bubble thing and took it for a short ride and all seemed in good order. I am taking my son to practice and i will see how it does. Would the lack of a fan shroud cause this problem to happen?

Re: Cooling issues

I let the truck sit in the driveway for at least 15-20 mins idiling and the temp never got above 180-185, and then driving, it begins to overheat. I never thought about the shroud until I read another post. I am going to the junkyard on Sunday to see what I can get.
