Post why i love my 72.

today i was trying to find and fix the exhaust leak that started when my truck back fired really bad a while back i found the cause at the rear of the driverside header. the two rear bolts towards the tailgate of the vehicle were completely loose. so i start tightening the one closest to me get, it tight then i found i couldnt reach the back one behind the header. now im pretty short, 5'7 so i just climbed right in and sat inside the engine compartment and tightended it up. now what other vehicle is there enough room in the engine compartment where you can climb in along side the engine to work on it?

I think that everyone (mostly) with a 67-72 had done this.

I know it can be done but I don't trust myself. I would probably break off some delicate vac fittings or damage the heater core or something.

Instead, I made a nice big block from 2X4's that stands about 2' long, 1' wide and 1' tall. I keep this in the back of the truck so if I need to work under the hood at anytime, I can reach everything.

I got this idea from when I worked as a mechanic. The garage had a few of these blocks made up for when a big truck would come in.

Tip: use pressure treated wood especially if your going to keep in your truck.

I know what you mnean. I'm screaming this every time I have to work on my wife's Durango( which has been quite often)hehehe. With my straight six there's enough room to climb all over and work on just about everything on the engine. Try doing that with the foreign jobies.

I usually put my a$$ on the radiator support, and my feet on the valve covers. Works great for getting at the distributor or carb . I could proably comfortalby sleep under the hood of a I6 truck, lol.

Well, as much as I love my '71 for the same reason, I'm 6'5" 325 lbs and have more than once climbed up into the compartment on my '94. There's some space in there too. Sorry, I know its a sin to drive anything that new.

Yup, I used to spend alot of time standing next to my engine, or straddling it or whatever. Big bays are so nice.. espescially when you're installing the engine, you can just stand in front of it, wrap your arms around it, give it a big hug and shove it in place with the transmission. I don't usually cry at weddings, but after my 350 got married to my transmission, I was fighting back the tears..LMAO

Re: why i love my 72.

My FIL, who was 5'-5", had a 72 Pontiac Catalina. To work on the dizzy he'd climb up on the rad and sit like a catcher, knees bowed out, leaning over tweeking the points.

Me, I built a platform outta 4x4's and 1" deck boards. Gives me just the right reach.

Have fun.....don t. .....
