Underbed Spare Tire Holder, Keep or Turf?

I have one of them spare tire holder under my back box(1987 Silverado). I have heard they are not vey good? Are there other options? I have the bar that goes accross the tire but the P.O now has a chain holding it up. does anyone have a pic of what its suppose to look like mayby I can find some parts at a wrecker? or should i just thow it in the box?. I plan on putting a sport bumper on soon and dont know how that will look? And a trailer hitch too...

Re: Underbed Spare Tire Holder, Keep or Turf?

I just pulled my under-bed spare carrier off this weekend. the last thing I want to do if I have a flat is to crawl under the truck to get the spare. I don't know how old the spare is but it's all dry rotted anyway. I have another spare to use and I'm going to mount it up on the side of the bed between the tailgate and the driver side wheel well. I looked at a couple of mounts that are for sale (like this) but I think I'm going to fab my own. (have a design in my head but haven't tried to build it yet)

I can take a pic of the pieces tonight when I get home if you need it.

Re: Underbed Spare Tire Holder, Keep or Turf?

Even with a sport bumper the spare is fairly well hidden, plus it is protected from the suns direct rays, at least that has always been my thought. I always have a cable with a lock around the spare on my older model trucks, otherwise they are easy pickings for thieves.

Is just personal preference if you want the spare in the bed in plain site and exposed (does make it a lot more convenient though, as mentioned) or hidden and protected (and another reason to say more four letter words on the side of the highway as semis buzz by doing 75mph).

Re: Underbed Spare Tire Holder, Keep or Turf?

I now have a bed cover, so I no longer use my in-bed mount, but many years ago, I threw the under the truck spare tire carrier in the trash. The flat would make you crawl under it for the spare and the spare was always packed full of mud and dirt. I didn't need that. I went to my local truck supply and purchased a mounting bracket that runs from the bed floor to the top edge of the bed and this allowed me to mount the spare upright at the fron fo the truck bed. I then put a vinyl tire cover on the spare and it did not look bad at all. With the installation of my hard coaver, I just lay the tire in the bed and it has not given me any problems being there.
