Didnt pass inspection (Texas) :(
My 84 Silverado Pickup didnt pass inspection. I was told I need 4 cats, a smog pump, and emergency brake cable, and new gas cap.
I can take care of the emergency brake cable and gas cap, but smog pump and cats? Thats going to be expensive!!! WTF do I do? I need to get this truck going. Any suggestions? tips or advice? As of right now it has a set of headers with a flowmasters dumped in before the rear axle.

Re: Didnt pass inspection (Texas) :(
I registered mine as an antique, no annual inspections, 50 bucks for 5 years. Of course, I only drive it in shows or for routine maintenance !

Re: Didnt pass inspection (Texas) :(
man isnt your truck a "classic" now.... 24 years i think it is and then its a safty only. Its either 24 or 25. If it is a safty only, tell the inspector it came like that from the factgory and as long as you pass the safty portion, your set! do some searching on the texdot site about the emisssion law.. im an inspector but I rarly see anything older than 02 inthe shop.

Re: Didnt pass inspection (Texas) :(
I don't know your local regs, but I can't see why you would need 4 cats. Stock would be one, and a second needed for true duals. Maybe you can do what harnalien did, and register it as a antique.

I got an idea...MOVE!
Really, I feel bad for all of you with inspections & emissions garbage. But at the same time, it has good reason.

Re: Didnt pass inspection (Texas) :(
I dont know. I might go try a different place. I've never had that much trouble on my other cars. I didnt think Texas was that hard to pass. Everything else was in order. Just those other details.

Re: Didnt pass inspection (Texas) :(
Go somewhere else. They can't make you add something that wasn't there from the factory.

Re: Didnt pass inspection (Texas) :(
The inspector is smoking crack. Your does require at least one cat. Tell him to input a C10 not a 1500. Take it to the next county.

Re: Didnt pass inspection (Texas) :(
You don't have to take it to another county. '84 is safety only.

Re: Didnt pass inspection (Texas) :(
I agree.... go somewhere else as you should only need 1 cat.
Also, to be legal, you can't do duals w/2 cats because the factory never offered them that way (thus, that combo would never have been certified).

Re: Didnt pass inspection (Texas) :(
Im just a little south of you and the only thing they look for here is cats, the heat riser tube from the exhaust to the air cleaner and , the gas cap, and the e brake has to work, and the stock air cleaner, but you'd be better off goin antique tags as mentioned. No more inspections. I have two running antique tags, and am about to put them on two more, but they arent daily driven. I dont think I have even seen anything with 4 cats. Ive seen two resonaters, and two cats but never 4 cats, and definately not on any 84 and I have owned/do own many of these squarebody beauties. That inspector had no idea what he was doing.

Re: Didnt pass inspection (Texas) :(
84 and under is exempt at this point, so it's a safety inspection only.
I do remember reading a rule that 84 and up has to have catalytic converter(s) if originally equipped with them, but it is VISUAL ONLY. It just has to be there, but if whether it's hollowed out or not is none of their business. By no means do you need 4 of them either. Find another place, the place you first went to is just trying to cause you grief or sell their repair services to you.

Re: Didnt pass inspection (Texas) :(
the solution brother here in TEXAS
is to NOT BRING an old chevy to the big chain places, they made me replace my steering wheel. you gotta go to a napa or reeders or carquest and talk to the guys there and ask them who does inspections. 84 unfortunately is the year cats were installed, so that's the only real issue. find a good down home garage with an old timer that loves these and he'll pass you, stay away from quick lube! and places like that.
