Alignment shop methods

One shop said they use a machine and do a four wheel alignment and another said they put the truck on a hoist and hang things from the upper ball joints and I suppose other places to take readings to determine whether anything is needed.

Is one method preferable to the other?

Re: Alignment shop methods

I use a Hunter alignment machine...

http://www.hunter.com/pub/product/al...947T/index.htm

the machine at our shop is very similar to this one....targets mount on each wheel to determine the current alignment angles...

Re: Alignment shop methods

Yes. The fellow said there is a slot on the upper ball joint that something fits into.

Re: Alignment shop methods

Just thought you guys may want to see this site I came across:

http://www.carcraft.com/howto/48938/index.html

It explains it pretty well and has some good pics and diagrams.

Re: Alignment shop methods

that's what I would do to get it close enough, so I could take it to an alignment shop....

Re: Alignment shop methods

I just finished off my front end last night, in the pouring rain, and slapped on the new rims and set it down. Turns out it's positive cambering on one side, negative on the other, and the tie rod ends need to be adjusted. I found that article and figured I would do just what you said, tommie. That should get me close enough to not screw up my tires on the way over to a shop.

Re: Alignment shop methods

Thanks for posting that. Wish I'd known how to do that earlier. Just wobbled over to the alignment shop where my truck was off their measuring scale on alignment. They fixed everything, but the damage done driving around before I got it there has cost me two tires.
