Re: what rear end do i have?
When your talking ten bolt vs twelve bolt, we are referencing the bolts on the ring gear to the carrier, not the cover. There should be a series of numbers / letters on the top right of you axle housing, not sure if its on the rear top or front top, which will give your an idea of what you have. Some where on this site you can decipher this...

I just saw that chart with the ID numbers not long ago on here. rain man, do you have 5 bolt wheels, which is what an El Camino should have had, or 6 bolt?

Re: what rear end do i have?
Almost 50% of my recent experiences with Autozone have involved the wrong part in the right package.
On my last (hey, is that a double entendre?) return, the counter worker needed me to tell him the part I was returning was a master cylinder, while it was out of the box on the counter in front of him.

Re: what rear end do i have?
While it is true that 10 or 12 bolt refers to the number of ring gear bolts, it will most certainly coincide with the number of bolts holding the cover on too. Very few GM rearends had 10 bolt ring gears and 12 bolt covers. I've read about them, but me or anyone I know has ever seen one that the cover bolts didn't match the ring gear bolts in number.

Re: what rear end do i have?
I think they came with a 10 bolt. My 61 panel has a 10 bolt (cover) but I don't think it's original because it has finned brake drums which I don't think they had in '61. I think mine is a "corporate 10 bolt" out of a later truck.
Check this site to match up your cover gasket shape (scroll about half way down), six bolt wheels would mean a truck, not a car, I'd think. http://coloradok5.com/axleguide.shtml

Re: what rear end do i have?
That CK5 link doesn't show the older 10 bolts.
The '60-'62 C10 trucks had 10 bolt rear ends. They can be identified by the perfectly round rear cover with 10 bolts and a fill plug. Also the third member is removeable from the front of the housing. If you have something different, then it isn't original.

Re: what rear end do i have?
looks like a 12 bolt from possibly a 65-70 (not sure when they first relocated the panhard mount), the location of the panhard bar attachment indicates it definitely isn't a '61, and 71-72 would have had 5 bolts hubs, you said yours were 6. again, I'm not sure when they went back to 6 bolts. Does your frame have an X member?

i know this is a stupid question but the x member is what?? if it is what i think it is i dont see how it has anything to do with the rear? if it is what i think it is it is the part the gos in between the front wheels hold every thing together, the engine sits on top of it right??

Re: what rear end do i have?
no,no, not a stupid question, it's me using the wrong terminology and just confusing the issue, but I don't mean cross member as in a front suspension crossmember or a transmission crossmember, but rather an x frame between the outer frame rails (the 60-62 frames had this, the 63-66 didn't). it does affect the location of the trailing arm mounting pads. its no big deal, certainly doesn't change the fact that you have a 12 bolt, just wondering if the PO had modified the 12 bolt, just forced it to fit (which it apparently will do 'cause some on here have done it), or perhaps you had a later frame (kinda unlikely). I know there's a picture on here somewhere to explain better, I'll see if I can find it.
Again, sorry to confuse the issue. Your panhard bar (trackbar) has been modified. The earlier bar was longer because it mounted to the axel differently.

Re: what rear end do i have?

Re: what rear end do i have?
no need to crawl under if you have the torsion bar front end, it should be this style frame

Re: what rear end do i have?
That looks exactly like the 12 bolt in my 65 that I was just painting today.
