New member-Just bought my a 68

I am new to this forum so first allow me to offer my thanks for all of the things I have learned while silently browsing. I already own a 1966 Chevy PU/327/4 speed that my father gave me and I love it. I have always wanted a 67-72 Chevy as well but just never thought I would find myself in front of one with enough money to cover the cost. Well, last week a co-worker sold me a 68 that he had just purchased from a small town fire department last year where it had been garaged for decades. He semi-restored it by taking it apart and repainting the frame and then the body. It has new rubber, new radiator, new Edlebrock 650 carb, new battery and new alternator on a 350 with about 10,000 miles on a rebuild. The truck came with the original owners manual, protectoplate brochure and records for everything that had ever been done to it. (The 350 replaced the engine the Fire Chief blew up, too bad.) I will be repainting it, putting on some new rims and replacing the steering wheel with an original but that is about it. When I am done it will become my daily driver. I do have one quick question - what is the best mileage I can get out of a 350?

Thanks guys for the welcome! I did feel like I stole it since there is zero rust and it is 97% straight.

That could be one of the best finds I have seen for the price. I kinda like the orange and black scheme it has going on...but it def needs some new rims.

Welcome to the board...also from Oregon

Very nice purchase. I think gas mileage-wise, you're probably realistically looking at 13-15 mpg with the setup you have now; lots of things you can do to improve it al little, but then you could just keep that money and spend it on fuel. Welcome to the boards and keep us posted!

Re: New member-Just bought my a 68

Thanks, I figured around 15 mpg at best. I have come to see why the previous owner likes the orange but it just isn't my color. (Even though it does make finding it easier in a parking lot!) It kind of looks like a Harley Davidson combo. Anyway, I will also be recovering the seat with leather and replacing the mirrors but most of the work has already been done so it won't take much. I plan on driving it for at least the next 10 years.

Nice truck and welcome.

Remember we don't drive old trucks for gas mileage!

Re: New member-Just bought my a 68

Lol - great point. I'm not too worried anyway, I could pay 400 plus a month in new truck payments or just use the money for gas in a truck that is much better in my opinion.

Re: New member-Just bought my a 68

You stole it for $999. How does it run? Which Engine does it have in it? Looks like the body is in great shape! Is that new paint? Congrats again. Do you have any pics of the interior?

Re: New member-Just bought my a 68

Yeah, I got really lucky for that price. The 350 runs really good (not sure yet of the specific engine generation but will post more later) and the paint is new. He just shot it after buying it from the Caldwell Fire Department. I had never heard of the faux-paint job until recently but that is what it looked like before he shot it, a red, worn paint job with their logo, it looked cool. He kept the pix though. I will take some interior shots and post them soon.
