WIW: 95 Chevy Diesel Dually

I'm very interested in buying this truck and would like to get your guys opinions. It is not in the same state as me so I had a fellow board member (c10seconds...thanks man! ) check it out and he says that it runs and drives solid and good. No noises, hesitations or issues.

So here are the details and info.

1995 Chevrolet 3500 Extended cab 2wd 6.5T Diesel with an Auto and dual rear wheels. Odometer shows 280,000 miles.

Pros:
Rebuilt Motor with less than 4k miles
Rebuilt Trans. with less than 4k miles
New Turbo with less than 4k miles
New A/C Compressor with less than 4k miles
Front Suspension rebuilt with less than 4k miles
6 new tires with less than 4k miles
Carfax history shows a clean record. Registered as a commercial vehicle for 3 out of the 4 owners.

Cons:
Oil drips from the "block" where the oil cooler lines go in. (A few at start up and a few after you shut it off)
Pulls a little to the right when going down the road
Driver door had a dent and PO attempted to pull the dent by drilling numerous holes. Well it is still dented and has holes. Needs a new door.
Could use a real tailgate
The paint is sun faded and spider cracked in spots
One dually fender has a small gash
Dash has a 1-2 inch crack above the gauge cluster
Driver seat power motor is worn out
1 cigarette burn on the front passenger seat and one on the back seat
Driver sun visor has a few rips

SO.......what do you think this truck is worth? Or should I say, if you were in the market for this exact truck with all the options you wanted, what would you be willing to pay for it? I have checked out KBB and Nada, but I know that vehicles aren't selling for what they book for right now. They are going for much less. But it also has a lot of current work done to it.

Based on what you said your buddy said about it, what do you have to lose? Mechanically, it's a 4K mile truck. The cosmetics won't hurt the running part and won't affect anything else until you start to "fix it up".

How far "across country" are you talking about?

Yeah. I hear ya. That's how I see it too. Im not worried about the cosmetics too much as long as it runs and drives in tip top shape. Its just tough because I have to fly in to buy it and I have never bought a vehicle so far away and drove it home.

Well, the initial drive from where it is to where I am is gonna be about 500 miles. Then I will be driving it another 1700 miles in a few weeks. Literally, across the country. Haha.

So what would you say as far as price?

If you do buy it, if a fair condition '97 dually tailgate will fit, I have one you can have for the price of freight. I no longer have our dually.
WIW? I'll reverse the question. After considering what the cosmetics would cost for your use and preferences, and how it fits your needs. Decide what YOU think is a fair price both for seller and yourself.
Sound like a solid driveline. Good Luck on what you decide.

Re: WIW: 95 Chevy Diesel Dually

What's the seller asking for it? I dont' think I would pay more than $4,000 for it in my area but that's just me. As already mentioned above big trucks are simply not selling like they used to. 280k on the chassis is quite a bit of miles.
What state is the truck in? Hopefully not from the rust belt.

Just thinking out loud here.

Hey man. I appreciate that. I may take you up on that offer. Same color too? Im gonna be heading east via I40. How far away are you from I40?

The cosmetics are not a big deal. Like I said, the mechanicals are the biggest part. It is everything I am looking for in a truck, aside from the few issues. Im gonna use it as a DD for now. In the near future it will be hauling a trailer very often. So a work truck and a DD.

Well the guy is asking $5900 in his ad. I was really hoping to spend around $4000 on a truck. But I have come to find that these are not as easy to come by and not very common in and around NM. Based on those figures, what do ya think?

Thanks.

$5900. I would like to get it for $4000 but I know for a fact that he will not go that low. 280k on the chassis is alot but not for a big truck. Plus the front end has been rebuilt. And the rear end doesn't make any noises or have any issues, from what I am told.

The truck is in Arizona.

I appreciate the thinking out loud. It wouldn't do me any good for you to think quietly. haha.

I agree. It looks like a nice solid truck. Looks like you already have a new tailgate for it too. That's awesome. Maybe he'll meet you at the $5k mark???Good luck on whatever you decide.

Well thanks for the input. Do you think $5000 would be a good deal to jump on if I can get him down that low?

Re: WIW: 95 Chevy Diesel Dually

Well, I flew out to Phoenix yesterday morning and drove her back yesterday afternoon. She made it all the way back without any major issues or hiccups.

I will post some pics in a new "build" thread once I get her cleaned up.

On a side note, the "service engine soon" light would come on when climbing a hill or slight grade when I was between 55-65 or so. But as soon as I would let off the gas, even slightly, the light would go off. When cruising or climbing at 70-80, it didn't come on. However, when going 70-80 it felt as if it was revving high. Approximately 2500 rpms at 75 mph. I wanted it to "kick into overdrive" but maybe it already was and it is just the gearing on the truck. And when I would let it decelerate, I would push the pedal to the floor and it wouldn't down shift like I expected. FYI, the transmission shifts very smoothly and most of the time I couldn't even feel the shift.

I know this is alot to consider, but does anyone have any ideas what my issue/issues may be.

Good to hear you got it home with no probs. Other than maybe buying a 5th wheel camper I have no need for a truck like yours but I'd like to have one anyway. On the SES I don't know unless it's an egr thing. Have you checked it yet for stored codes?

Thanks. I don't have a need for a truck this big right now, but it will be put to work very soon. Hauling heavy trailers. Plus I just like dually truck and the diesel power and mileage to boot. Haha.

I was thinking a EGR, or vacuum or something to do with the transmission? I dunno. Im not very well rehearsed on these trucks. I have not checked the stored codes yet. That is on the to do list for monday.

You didn't happen to check the mileage did you? I hear of some of these 6.2 & 6.5 getting real good mileage not towing.
PM sent.

I sure didn't. I'll let you know what I come up with when I get fuel in the next few days. I've heard the same thing.
