Cool just pulled my 700 R4 trans what do yall think

i went to the junkyard and found a 700 R4 for my truck. to replace my blown long 9" tail turbo 350. both the seals on the trans are in great shape and didnt leak. the fluid was clean, so im going to risk skipping the rebuild for now. i know i will have to eventually but i cant afford it now ha ha.

i got a new filter and pan gasket to flush it and will keep yall updated!

can anybody tell me if i infact have a 700 R4 and anything else about it from the stamping.

the stamping on the transmission is:

7YKM-Y-00102804-2110

all ive been able to find out is that is is an 86 model.

Re: just pulled my 700 R4 trans what do yall think

are you going to send it out to the transmission shop to have the lock up kit installed...? You know there not a direct swap... they need to put a lock up kit so that it will shift properly, without having a computer to tell it what to do... Unless you already have a tbi or computer controlled engine already in front of it..?

It looks to be an earlier 700r4 good but newer ones are better to use. Just make sure you get that lock up set up right and the tv cable you,ll be good. RIDDLA

Re: just pulled my 700 R4 trans what do yall think

definitely make sure the TV cable is hooked up right. you'll want it to shift out of first under normal acceleration around 10-15mph,at wide open throttle the cable should not be completely tight have a little room left to pull. It controls the pump pressure the tighter it is the more pressure and thats when damage can happen. If you had a th350 then you'll need a bracket for the TV cable I used a lokar cable and bracket, it'll cost you a little but worth it

if thats what you got then it will have to do. they tend to flex a little but getting the adjustment correct is the main thing good luck

Re: just pulled my 700 R4 trans what do yall think

you need to go to www.bowtieoverdrives.com and read up on these. Just tossing it in there and hooking the TV cable up like you are talking about can kill a good tranny in 10 - 20,000 miles. It'll feel good, sound good, shift good, and then one day... nothing.
Spend the money now, or spend it later.

Re: just pulled my 700 R4 trans what do yall think

here's the deal... the 700's were put behind throttle body/ computer controlled engine's. They needed to be told when to go into "lockup" by the ecm from the engine. You CAN use them behind older engine's, but you will have to have a "manual" lockup kit installed. The kit once it's installed will work electrically, and tell your tranny when to go into lockup... if you don't have it done properly you WILL fry your new/used tranny. I believe the kit runs around $120-$140 bucks almost anywhere, but you will need a reputable tranny shop to install it for you... hope that helps...

Re: just pulled my 700 R4 trans what do yall think

There is no need to buy a lockup kit if you're any kind of handy. You feed 12 volt power though the electrical connector on the left side of the trans. Inside you run a wire from that 12 volt pin to the 4th gear pressure switch, which is the one with two prongs. Then run a second wire from the other prong of the 4th gear switch to the lockup solenoid.

When you accelerate and hit 4th gear, the switch closes and energizes the lockup solenoid which locks the converter. When you slow down and it drops out of 4th, the converter will unlock. That's all the Painless Wiring kits does.

I was taught this by the manager of Phoenix Transmission. It works and is what they do to their builds.

www.phoenixtrans.com

Here is a diagram of what I am talking about. I don't run the brake light switch though.

I've done it to every single 700 I've ever run in an early vehicle for many miles.

There are couple of online spedo gear calculators:

http://www.700r4.com/speedoCalc/speedocalc.shtml
http://www.tciauto.com/Products/Tech...eedo_gears.asp

I used to own a 74 malibu in my younger days and it is sad to see Classic Elky on JY....

Re: Speedo gear????????

If you're running 33" tires with a 2.73 gear, you aren't going to be able to use the OD in the 700R4 until a fairly high speed.

Cool Re: speedo gear???

yea i know it sucks ha ha but i plan on finding a good set of rear gears soon.

while im on that subject, can i just pull the whole rear end out of a 88-98 truck, and bolt it in?

or will i have to change the spring and/or shock mounts up. also is the axel the same length?

Re: just pulled my 700 R4 trans what do yall think

The 2.73 gears and 33" tires are bad enough w/o overdrive. The only advantage that the 700r4 has is the lower 1st gear, this will help it not feel like a complete dud. Even at that the engine RPM should only be 1800 or so at 65MPH in 3rd gear/no OD.
Overdrive would be totally useless in a truck that is already geared waaay to high. To try to run at 70 MPH, the engine would only run 1350 RPM? It's just not going to do that very long, you will burn it up as it shifts back and forth not knowing where to settle.

Re: speedo gear???

The '88-'98 rear ends are about 1.5-2" wider than what you have now. I haven't checked the spring perches to see how they compare. They are probably wider since the frames are wider.
