th350 long shaft inner speedo gear position?

Ok on my th350 long shaft i was taking the tailshaft housing off to take it to the shop to get the bushing out for replacement well i noticed that the plastic speedo gear that slides on the tailshaft was not secure, it was just sliding around- well i found the clip for it in the housing but my question is which way does it slide on? my book says it slides from the front but when i do that it still sticks out past the smooth of the tailshaft, when i slide it the other way it sits right but i dont know if thats correct. Couldnt find a picture of it so i made a diagram with paint
when sliding from the left it sits right
when sliding from the right it sits off
the dot is where the clip sits

i know i know mad paint skills
any ideas?

Re: th350 long shaft inner speedo gear position?

Kyle, don't worry about the book (this time anyways) put the gear on so that it's finish position is centered or nearly so on the shaft. Clip goes into hole first then gear slide on. Gear should require being tapped into position, it's a tight fit. If gear is loose, replace it or it will slide off again. Also make sure gear is flat across the groove faces and not "apple cored" in the center. If it is worn like that, replace the gear and check for a tight cable or sdeedo driven gear in the adapter where the cable attaches. jim

Little stuff left to do is mount winch, wet sand & buff out and build belly pan\running boards. Body work takes lots and LOTS of beer!!!! God, Guts and Guns made America and God, Guts and Guns will preserve it! The worst thing you could do is get into my sights, but that don't matter, you'll never know it, cause you'll never hear the shotJim or Paladin whichever you choose.
