Any filter except ones made by fram. !!!!... Pennzoil & weight depends on the weather, miles on the engine & how hard I'm pounding it; 5w30 (january 20 below) 10w30 normal winter, 10w40 summer, 20w50 pounding it do death (towing summer)..............Zoomy

I use 10w30 penzoil and fram filters. when I got my 90 jimmy it had a bad head gasket from overheating the engine, granted it had close to 200,000 miles on it. but anyway my buddy bought it new and used quaker state oil the whole time. and when I pulled the intake and valve covers you couldnt see the pushrods or rocker arms they had so much gunk built up around them. I had to chip it away with a screwdriver and suck it out with the shop vac. so I swear never to use quaker state oil in anything.

The same thing happened to my '89 Silverado w 175K miles, the gunk was so bad it clogged the PCV system causing the rear main to blow(that's what a mechanic friend told me). No mor Quaker state fo me.

LOL...look at the date of my previous post in this thread...this one was started over a year ago!
Now I'm using Mobil 20w50. Maxlife was doing nothing other than hurting my wallet.

LOL, that is pretty funny. But I have a question. My engine is a crate w/ 40,000 or so miles. I replaced the oil pump and started to use 20/50 b/c its sooooooooo damn hot here. its 97* outside right now. And ever since then, when driving my oil pressure is almost maxed out, but when I drive its about 1/2 or little more. I heard either it might be too thick of oil or something else. Anyone have any help?

20w50 is certainly awfully thick for a relatively new engine. 10w30 would be just fine, or maybe 10w40. But 20w50 is a lot unless you're dealing with an engine with at least 100,000mi more miles than that (like my 134,000 mile 350 with 33 year old rings!)

20w50 Pennzoil w/ Fram (unfortunately) filters. I only use them because I can't find any other brand around here, and I'm too lazy to order Wix or AC.
I use 10w40 in the Cadillac engines; '81 w/ 368 and '90 w/4.5L. I think Oil brands are like car brand loyalty; I've always used Pennzoil because my parents swore by Pennzoil, and they used it because their mechanic(s) always used it. My grandfather always used it, and that's why I think my mom got me to use Pennzoil. |

Might as well add my 2cents worth of opinion...
I am a believer in synthetics, but only if the engine has been introduced to them with less than 30k or so and using the factory recommended weight, ie, 10W-30. I have taken a few engines apart with 100k+ miles.....seems like the worst sludge in engines ran penzoil and quakerstate oils. I ran valvoline 10W-30 Turbo formula in a turbo charged car I own....blown head gasket at 55k, the top half of the engine was still extremely clean. Synthetics will find leaks in an engine quickly and I dont recommend switching back and forth. For the most part, syn oil will prevent alot of gum and sludge build up due to excessive heat. Allow longer run times, sometimes beyond the recommended filter changes. I myself like both Mobil_1 and K&N oil filters, mainly due to the fact that they use synthetic filter media and not paper. But in the end, it's what ever makes one happy, everyone has there opinions...
