what to paint the dropmember with?
i really need the answer to this. i need a durable paint to do my frame and front dropmember with. i do not want to powdercoat it just in case i forget something during assembly. i dont want to spend a ton of money on show quality paint either. i am going to sand blast all the components and then......, i would like some feedback on what all you fellow dropmember guys did, any help would be great thanks, daniel.

Re: what to paint the dropmember with?
I know you said no powder-coating because of maintenance. What color were you thinking?
Black satin powder coat can be easily be touched up w/Krylon 'industrial' satin-blk or VHT epoxy satin-blk (both in rattle cans). N2billet had a frame PC'd & then changed direction to install F/R Dropmembers which required cutting into that fresh PC. When it was all said & done, if you didn't know where the frame was touched up, you didn't know it was touched up. That's why I like satin blk PC. It's an ultra strong foundation that can be touched up w/rattle cans if necessary in the future. No, it won't be as strong as the PC, but it will keep things looking uniform.

Re: what to paint the dropmember with?
POR-15 would be great...it is very easy to apply with just a brush and once it dries, it looks like you sprayed it on there. Great product in my opinion....

I used Rustoleum Hammertone paint. Looks kinda like powercoat, and easy to touch up.

Por 15's durability blows away powder coating.

Re: what to paint the dropmember with?
POR 15 sticks to anything. I would recommend it like the above post states, brush it on, make sure theres no dust and it will give you a high gloss shine like if you sprayed it on. If I was doing my frame, that's what i would use.

Re: what to paint the dropmember with?
if you go the por - 15 route, make sure you use the metal prep, then coat with por-15. you will want to topcoat if anything will be exposed to the sun as por-15 has no UV inhibitors....

Re: what to paint the dropmember with?
I would give it a coat of epoxy primer to seal it up and ensure that any chips don't result in rust creep. Then coat with something pliable to resist chipping.

Re: what to paint the dropmember with?
I used a chassis paint form summit. Very nice and durable, semi gloss. Easy to mix. You can brush it on or spray it on. I brushed it on and didn't like the brush strokes, so wet sanded smooth and sprayed it. Looks awesome!! I think it's like $50 or $60 a quart, but covers about 80 sq ft or so.
Check it out... http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SUM-CSUMUP501/ |

Re: what to paint the dropmember with?
I prefer Eastwoods rust encapsulator over por15. Its not a glossy finish, but I have had better luck with it...no metal ready (which is muratic acid) and it covers well.

Re: what to paint the dropmember with?
Hey MSGross, your frame looks great!!! Especially after looking at the before pics . How much primer and paint did it take to complete the frame, and I didn't see a reference on their site for a sealer?
Oh and Nice rotisserie...Where did you get that? Last edited by nlped; 04-30-2010 at 10:31 AM. |
