fiber-optic cable

can someone explain the install of the fiber-optic cable for the shift indicator. this is on my 1972 tilt column. thank you

Tilt columns do not use the fiber optic cable. There is a gray wire that leads to the shift indicator, and a bulb fits in the housing.

The gray wire should be there...it is separate from the turn signal harness, and goes all the way up into the shift indicator housing. The other end plugs into the fuse panel. There is a socket on the end of it that holds a small bulb (I forget the size, but it is readily available at parts stores) When you remove the 2 screws on top of the column to get the indicator housing off, you should see the socket/bulb sitting right there beneath it. Hopefully it is not missing

Note: When you remove the housing be VERY careful not to break the shift indicator pointer. I made that mistake once...

The grey light wire plugs on the cluster feed terminal in the fuse panel. It will dim with the dash lights.

thanks again for the reply. i am a little confused about this shift indicator. there is no pointer by the letters. on the collar that moves with the shift lever there is a little hood like maybe a light would go in there and shine up onto the indicator??? thanks again

You need a new pointer, it is missing. That collar holds it and rotates it on the shift dial. The light bulb is inside the shift indicator housing and shines up into the dial.

well, there is no place for a light bulb under the shift indicator!!! this column came from a 1972 GMC and it is a tilt. would that be different than Chevy? thanks

No, they are the same. Sounds to me like it is missing also. Is there a gray wire sticking out along with the turn signal harness? If not, it is probably missing.
