Carb question

I've got a question for you guys. Recently I bought an Edelbrock electric choke carb. It runs great. The problem i'm having is that after I turn the motor off and wait 15min it is really hard to start. I have to step on the accelerator and leave it wide open to start. It runs rough for a couple of minutes and a plume of smelly "gas" smoke comes out of the pipes. What can I do to fix it?

Re: Carb question

Sounds like it is staying choked even after it warms up. They are adjustable if I remember correctly. Going off memory you need to loosen the choke housing and turn it counterclockwise a little.

Re: Carb question

could be the floats set too high. Letting it flood the intake with gas after you shut it down. Pull your breather and watch the top of your carb when you turn it off. If you see a bunch of fumes coming up, it's probably flooding itself.

Re: Carb question

it sounds like you have to adjust the flux capacitor about 8degrees and make sure the battery is giving you 1.21 jigawatts.

If it's the floats like old man jimmy said you could still have the exact same problem with a 1405. Either way, they are all adjustable (choke and float) and its not uncommon to need tinkering.

Re: Carb question

EDIT: after re-read you are flooding it. Either with the choke staying on, or you really need to check the floats. Also do you have the right fuel pump? They can only handle something like 5 psi.

Also you can adjust where the electric choke comes in, I turned mine way down. The 1406 can be great, it does require tuning/tweaking to get it just right.

Re: Carb question

Thanks guys for the input. I'm gonna adjust the choke a little at a time to see if that fixes the problem. I'll keep you posted.

Re: Carb question

do you have a carb spacer, or is it bolted directly to the intake? I had this problem with my new edelbrock because I had no spacer, and the hot intake was boiling the fuel out of the bowl, making it start hard when warm. I added a 1/2" spacer and the problem disappeared.

Re: Carb question

What kind of spacer did you get? Where did you pick it up? How many carb gaskets will I need?

Re: Carb question

I was going to mention the spacer as well. I found in stock at local parts store. Get the plastic ones as the aluminum ones defeat the purpose by transferring heat up into the carb.
