Small Parts Rust Removal

I remember seeing a thread on this a few months back. This article on rust electrolysis was just in the April Family Handyman Magazine.

Good self-explanatory photos.

Re: Small Parts Rust Removal

Timely post. Just this week I cleaned a gas tank using electrolysis.

I built a bent rod to fit in the tank and secured it by drilling a hole in a block of wood to keep it insulated from the tank. Clamp positive to the rod, negative to the tank itself, and fill tank with water/ wash soda mixture.

Worked stellar.

I pour 5 gallons of vinegar in a foot tub I have and drop my parts in it for about 3-4 days on all my small stuff. Pull it out and nothing but metal and pretty cheap. You would be amazed what vinegar will do the first time you try it.

Re: Small Parts Rust Removal

I saw an article awhile back that shows a guy doing an entire frame in a backyard pool. Pretty crazy stuff, but it worked mint. I do agree with the vinegar thing, very cheap and works great.
