Does a solid axle swap add value to a truck?
I saw a nice 1998 truck for sale the other day. But the guy wants an extra 2 grand because it has a solid axle swap. He thinks it adds more value EVEN THOUGH IT DIDN'T COST HIM A DIME. Is he right?

Re: Does a solid axle swap add value to a truck?
I understand that is it alot of work to do a swap like that. And it may make the truck worth a little more...to the right person. I wouldn't say worth $2000 more though. You can pay a shop to do a SAS for you for much less than that. Or you can do it yourself for even less.
On another note, if he trades it in at any dealership do you think they will give him $2000 more than trade in value for his truck??? No, not even close. In fact, Im sure they would give him less than trade in or may not even take it at all. Like I said, it may be worth it to the right person who wants a truck done that way and doesn't wanna have to do it or pay someone to do it. There is a market for everything and it is only worth what you are willing to pay.

wancosc356 said everything I was thinking, and no doubt said it better than I would have. It's only worth more if that's what you want -- probably not $2K more, and not that many people want a SAS. Dealers will definitely deduct at trade-in time... IF they will take it at all.
In the end, what matters is if it's worth it to you.

Re: Does a solid axle swap add value to a truck?
I'd say it makes it worth less for 99% of the population.
A buddy tried to trade in an F250 with a lift on it for a new F350, and the dealer said they'd give him $4000 more for trade in if he took it back to stock first.

Re: Does a solid axle swap add value to a truck?
In my experience modifications do absolutely nothing but reduce the value of a vehicle. I used to have a Mustang that was set up for autocross with all the awesome parts and I couldn't get the same amount as the same car completely stock with the same mileage.

Re: Does a solid axle swap add value to a truck?
who knows, since there is no real "standard" for sas's, it could be some cobbled together accident waiting to happen. as dad always told me: don't mess with the steering or the brakes if you don't know what you're doing. just search the internet or pirate4x4 for some pretty scary "fab" work.

Re: Does a solid axle swap add value to a truck?
I think if its a wheelr it ads value over a IFS set up. really depends on what the truck is set up for. IF a dana 60 king pin was swapped in sure i could see it costing a good bit of coin. But just like any mod you will never get back what you put in unless the work is done yourself or you get it done real cheap. Dealers want stock but I realize this is not what your asking.

Re: Does a solid axle swap add value to a truck?
NO even if you had to buy another truck to do the swap you are lookin at about another $1500-$2000 for the second truck. Then once you sell all your un-used parts you wind up having about $200-$500 in the parts that you are using (this is if I was using all GM parts) front axle, rear axle, springs, hangers, and the transfer case. If using a ford front axle you are still lookin at about the same price on the axle and springs alone. the only differance is if a Dana 60 was bought for the project by its self (around here they can go from $200-$1200 depending on who you know).
