help! need exploded veiw of tilt column I cant get it apart
has anybody taken one apart? I cant get the tilt section off the column so i can redo it. Ive got the upper berings out and the tilt tension spring out, and cant see anything else that would hold it.
If you have pics, know how, or have any sugestions I sure could use them.

Theres about 4 different GM tool # J-XXXX that instructions recommend using for pulling these suckers apart. Just gotta wing it. Heres an exploded tilt. Good luck!

Thanks for the pic, southpa
So it looks like its the cover that i cant get off. After that i should be able to pull the side pins and have it apart.
Anyone know how to get the cover off without wrecking it? Does it slide off? unscrew? or what. And thanks for the Help again!

I use a small screwdriver and hammer to tap the cover off. You will want to go around the cover to move it uniformally so as not to cock it. Penetrant will help it slide off easier as it is just a slight press fit.
Here is a pic. Jim |

disassembling tilt column
After removing the cover and driving out the 2" pin that I beleive holds in the tilt steps or shoe, what's next?
I like to dissasemble my tilt column completely. With the 2" pin out everything is still tight in place. Could someone get me to where everything is visibly self explanatory, then I'll take it from there. Thanks, Luis |

That pin is a pain in the @ss to get back in after you get it apart.
If I had to do it again I would leave the 2" pin in. Pull the side pins and then pullback on the tilt lever to release and they should seperate.

Yes, I know ...but I'll worry about that after I get the right pivot pin out. My slide hammer isn't budging it a bit. Someone must have installed it with JB weld. The screw broke in the hole and i've broken 3 drill bits already trying to tap it out. I'm getting close to getting the sledge hammer out
