I guess "it depends". Are your problems really caused by low vacuum? From a big cam? How much vacuum does it pull? After the cannister? How big are the tires/wheels? All of this "assumes" stock 1/2 ton brakes and that they are in good working condition?
You answer a few and we can do better with responses.

im pretty sure its from the big cam. i dont know how much vac it pulls. i know the brakes were fine before i put the 383 stroker in. im running 465hp/ 495 tq. brakes are good. all new in the front and backs are good. without the canister they are complete crap.. with it they are a little better.. driveable anyways. i cant lock them up, thats for sure.

Re: hydro or vacuum pump?? BRAKES

Get a vacuum gauge. You need 17" of vacuum to get a vacuum power booster to work correctly. That is IF:

you are running a 9" or larger Vacuum booster
you have the pivot and the fulcrum figured correctly
You engine is a good state of tune

I have a 330 HP crate motor, and have 18" of vacuum. The 8" dual diaphram booster sucked. The 9" gives me great brakes.

Go to one of the brake companies sites and read about where to drill the new hole in the brake pedal to get the 4 two one ratio for power brakes.

Check your tune up, and see IF by adjusting the timing you can get more engine vacuum WITHOUT giving up the horsepower.

My $.02 is that you will find 7"-10" of vacuum, and that a vacuum pump will get you where you need to be. I like a 9" booster over the 8"
HTH
Chip

BTW hydro boost was a lousy idea in the 80's. I am sure that technology has made it better, but the pedal feel never appealed to me

Re: hydro or vacuum pump?? BRAKES

I'd put a hydro booster in. It's simple and not expensive if you use parts from a wrecked vehicle. Lots of newer vehicles have... anything from astro vans to mustang gt's. powerstrokes to old delivery vans. I've got it in my 68 bronco and will be putting it in my c-10. The hydro boost shouldn't cost much more than $50 from the wreckers I could get them for just under $20 a couple years ago. The lines can cost a bit shouldn't be too bad. I think you could do it for under $200. The kits they sell $600 + are a rip off. take the time and research it.

You might flame me for writing this, but if you take a look on classicbroncos.com they have tech write ups on hydro boost and what vehicles you can find them on. I imagine they have HB info here also, but I'm a little more familiar with CB.

Funny! I didn't notice you were from edmonton. I've got a HB in my shed if you want to try it. Not sure if anything is wrong with it (shouldn't be), but at worst you'll have manual brakes unlike vacuum booster, which suck as you are working against the diaphragm when no worky.
