wont start dont know why!!!

i have a 72 chevy just changed the oil and transmission fluid. started before then right after the truck wouldnt start. the only thing that is different is the kickdown cable is gone. would that make it so the truck wont start? it has fuel and spark not sure what the problem is.

Re: wont start dont know why!!!

In my experience... three things that an engine needs to start:

Good fuel
Good ignition spark and proper timing of that spark.
Proper compression of the fuel.

Things that will prevent it from starting are:

The spark being redirected by moisture or cracks in the dist. cap.
Weak spark (coil)
Too much fuel- flooding.
Not enough fuel - filters or fuel pump. This is easily checked by squirting fuel into the carb throat.

Forgot to mention. WELCOME TO THE SITE!

Re: wont start dont know why!!!

Something, probably simple, has been knocked-off.....unplugged....or something. There is abosolutely no way that changing your fluids will cause a motor to not start IF it was starting just fine before you did the service. retrace your steps very carefully and try to figure what else you might have done.

Just covering the bases. How do you know it has fuel and spark? What did you do to test each??

That kickdown cable is near the distributor. Did you knock a coil wire or dist wire loose? Are you sure it was a kickdown cable you removed and not a throttle cable? 72 has a throttle cable.

Re: wont start dont know why!!!

i didnt use a pressure gauge but i undid the hose and it was spraying out. the fuel filter is dirty so i am going to get a new one. i put a spark plug to the block and it sparked. it also had compression. the throttle cable is intact and reactive. the only thing is the kickdown cable is not in the trans anymore but i dont understand why if it does affect it starting.

An inline fuel filter, or the one in the carburetor? A lot of times the filter on the fuel inlet gets overlooked.

Post us some pic's of your engine compartment. Specifically the dizzy area.
If you still havent solved the problem. I think you have inadvertantly knocked something loose.
