factory HO inline 6

ok so heres what caught my eye and two questions.
1) where can i find more specs/info?
2) its hard to tell from the pics but will the intake bolt to my 292?
seems like if i can copy this with my 292 then i can at least get a good start and feel what 205-220hp inline 6 feels like, then decide what more i want.

The OHC-6 design was adopted by Pontiac in the 1966 model year. The block was based on the Chevrolet Straight-6, but had block and head castings unique to the OHC. Both head and block were cast iron; only the large cam carrier/valve cover was aluminum. The engine featured a Single OverHead Cam and was the base engine in the Pontiac Tempest.

The Pontiac OHC-6 engine shared internal dimensions with the standard 230-cubic-inch (3.8 L) Chevrolet I6 block. The OHC head design put it in the avante garde of Detroit engineering. The single camshaft was supported by journals within the aluminum valve cover: no separate bearing shells were used. The cam was driven by a glassfiber-reinforced cogged rubber belt, instead of the usual metal chain, making it state of the art for the time - and very quiet. Valves were opened with finger followers (centered under the cam) that pivoted at one end on stationary hydraulic adjusters. The oil pump, distributor drive and fuel pump drive were not within the block, but were handled by an external jackshaft in an aluminum housing that bolted to the right side of the block. The jackshaft was driven by the rubber timing belt. The head had a single port face (exhaust and intake were both on the left side) and the valve stems were strongly tilted towards the left. This engine was used on the 1966 through 1969 Tempest and Le Mans and the 1967 through 1969 Firebird.

A high-performance version, called the Sprint, was an option. The Sprint featured high-compression pistons, a hotter cam, dual valve springs, a split/dual exhaust manifold, a better coil and utilized the then new Quadrajet 4-barrel carburetor. It was the first American high performance six cylinder engine since the demise of the Hudson Hornet.

The Pontiac OHC-6 engine ended production with the 1969 models.

Like other Pontiac engines of the era, it was not available in Canada; Canadian Pontiac automobiles came with the Chevrolet OHV six instead.
[edit] 230

The 230 OHC-6 engine was produced in 1966 and 1967. Power output was rated at 165 bhp (123 kW) from a displacement of 230-cubic-inch (3.8 L). The high performance Sprint version produced 207 bhp (154 kW).

The 250ci Engine (4.1L) replaced the 230ci (3.8L) from 1968 to 1969. The base engine produced 175hp while the Sprint versions that came with the automatic transmission were rated at 215hp. While the versions with manual transmission received a hotter camshaft which boosted the horsepower ratings to 230hp.

Re: factory HO inline 6

I can't say if it will bolt up.IIRC it wont but the point is nearly moot since the Pontiac OHC6 is about as common as hens teeth.I have only ever seen a couple and neither was in a car. There may have been some problems with them since they had parts no mechanic from the US had ever seen before.
You might find a Pontiac site with a search that has more info but if there's a following for them then parts are probably very expensive to non existant.

Re: factory HO inline 6

they were junk engines in the pontiacs the "sprint" was a higly optimistic rating on HP// theres lots can b done to a 292 check inliners.org///if you have a bundle of money look for the rare crossflow heads by wayne engineering

Re: factory HO inline 6

I've got the Pontiac intake, and sadly, it didn't bolt up. The ports line up, but the mounting flanges/holes were opposite to the holes on the head. After a ton of messing around, I was able to start it, but lost out to leaky sealing at the head and constant vacuum leaking. I was forced to put the stock intake back on, and have just installed the Offenhauser which looks like a beauty.

It's also pretty specific to the pontiac dual exhaust manifold it was built with. The shape of the intake (other than the Quadrajet ports) is almost identical to the Clifford Performance intake.

Its got a lot of nostalgia, and is pretty cool, but it also came out of Pontiac when John Delorean was in charge. (shudder)

Re: factory HO inline 6

wow thanks guys that was a quick response to what i thought would be a dead thread.
paneldeland, i haven't seen any either, thinking of more copying the specs,
cdowns, yes ive been to inliners, cliffords and etc, i just like to ask about every inline i see to see if their any hints and tricks to help these sixes generate power, are the wayne heads like the sissels, or totally different design?
oldbluey thanks at least i know for a fact, not guessing that they dont bolt up. im still thinking of using a q-jet maybe like they did as i do have 3 lying around just obviously need a major detune to get to the six level.
thanks everyone!
