Steering wheel paint
Hi guys,
I am going to restore my steering wheel. This is my first atempt at it. I want to know what would be a good (not real expensive) primer and paint to spray on it? I would like to paint it black. Thanks. Aaron |

Re: Steering wheel paint
The same materials as you would use on anything else. Before steering wheels were moulded in color, they were just painted. I have painted many of them. They don't require anything special.

Re: Steering wheel paint
I cleaned mine good with steel wool. Then I fixed the cracks in it with epoxy and sanded them to a near perfect finish.I hung on a piece of wire and sprayed the whole wheel with carb cleaner.I let it dry really well for a couple of hours. Then I sprayed it with rustoleum grey.I wanted a bit of "Old school style" so I wrapped it with a leather wrap.I've been driving it for 6-7 years and it still looks pretty good though if I were to redo the interior I would repaint it.

Re: Steering wheel paint
Here's a steering wheel thread I made awhile back. This is not the cheapest or easiest way but it turned out good. If I was going to just freshen up one for a "driver" I'd probably try a dye but you wouldn't want to prime it first. I already had the primer, so the cost was paint/reducer/activator on this:
