1972 SWB 4x4 Cheyenne in WA

I went and looked at this truck a few weeks ago and have been trying to negotiate with the current owner. It is one of the worst rusted out trucks I have ever seen. It had been exposed to the salt air/fog of the peninsula and the A pillers are rusted out with holes above the courtesy light switch. Top of the fenders and the top of the bed are rusted through to the inner dual wall.

Anyway, it is a cool truck and the only usable sheetmetal is the cowl...... All other panels are wasted beyond use.

I asked the owner to remove the motor (non original traded original matching #'s in on that long block) and all the other non original parts to try and reduce the price.

Someone might have more part resources and ability than I have to make this a nice truck without getting buried!

What are your thoughts on the value? He is dead firm on $4250.

Re: 1972 SWB 4x4 Cheyenne in WA

If there is no usable sheet metal why even try to bargain that price down?

Look in the trucks FOR SALE section here. Lots of nice trucks.

$ 4250 is a LOT to pay if you have to replace all of it.

Spend the extra money and get this,

You would be way better off time and money wise.

Re: 1972 SWB 4x4 Cheyenne in WAit

The truck does have a lot of desirable options, if they are original.

BUT, the rust issues would make me run backwards. You would end up putting a lot of money into a truck that you will never get your money out of if you try to sell it.

If you want the truck and want to spend the cash, go for it.
I would find a lower optioned truck and add what you want.

You can find one with rust in the rocker and cab corners and be way ahead.

I bought a 69 GMC for $3600 that only needed rockers replaced. It had about 97,000 documented original miles on it. Of course I replaced a lot more than what was needed, but I ended up with a decent truck that I could still get most of my money out of ( if I wanted to sell it )!

That truck would be a great find if it didn't have so much rust. I would love to find one with only rocker rust for that price, but body work adds up these days.

Good Luck!

Re: 1972 SWB 4x4 Cheyenne in WA

I paid 1/3 that for a`71 Custom Deluxe SWB Fleetside K/10 with 307/3spd low option all original truck that I don`t plan on using any sheet metal, interior,or drivetrain on.The truck could be restored, but it had it`s share of rust and hadn`t been run for over 10 years. It`s not a Cheyenne, but nothing I`m keeping matters and no numbers could keep my truck from going back as a Cheyenne Super or Highlander with a 350/TH350,buckets,a/c,tilt tach,am/fm,front & rear posi, and flotation tire option (my dream truck) in whatever color. But still, this truck is a true Cheyenne,no story to tell, truck.I think if you can come up with the parts cheaply and easily it could be worth close to that to you.

Because of what it is, it deserves to be restored and would be a cool truck. He has my number so we will see what comes of it.

I saw Randy's truck and it would be a great start.

How rare are 72 SWB 4x4 AC Cheyenne Super's?

Re: 1972 SWB 4x4 Cheyenne in WA

I was trying to buy this truck in Feb. Agreed to his asking price of $5200 which included extra bench seat, tilt column, original wheels and extra set etc. Just needed to verify condition. Tried to find someone on the board to take a look for me and came up empty. Owner said only serious rust was rockers and rear wheel wells. Since I couldn't get someone to take a look I requested more pictures. The pics were telling a much different story. He got mad when I requested pictures of the floor. Got some snotty emails but no more pictures. He said he was stuck on the price of $5200. Later another board member was looking at the truck at $4500 "firm". Now it's $4250 "firm". I'd be patient and wait him out. I think it is a great truck. A true Super with A/c, fac tach, and posi. For a guy like me, with out paint and body skills it looked like a lot more than I wanted to bite off. especially at that price. If the price got "right", I'd find a cleaner body and make one truck out of 2 if I was in WA.

Re: 1972 SWB 4x4 Cheyenne in WA

He wants to keep the steel wheels and the new Mud Terrain tires and still be at $4250 firm. He does not need the money, so it is just in the way for him. He plans on parking it until someone will step up.

I was a little frustrated going all the way out there and finding it as bad as it is. The rocker pictures actually looked as expected in the pictures, but the bed floor and the other remaining pieces are bad. It was raining pretty heavy when I looked at it so I wonder how the frame is where the body bolts on. I have seen enough of these to ask the right questions and he was not good with his description.

Re: 1972 SWB 4x4 Cheyenne in WA

It will never be original again with a different motor... Cheyenne or not. So I don't think its worth the hassle /money.Id find a better starting point and make it the way you want it. Could even make it a Cheyenne with a tach etc.
