Re: Spin on Oil Adapter kit??
The ones I've used (years ago) were not supposed to be used with the original bypass assembly. Is this what the installation instructions say to do?

I think the one he is using calls for the original bypass.

Re: Spin on Oil Adapter kit??
That looks like a quality design. Personally, I'd be very reluctant to ever use a spin on adapter again. Back in the 70's I had one fracture for no apparent reason, dropping the filter on the freeway which in turn wiped out the crank.

Re: Spin on Oil Adapter kit??
I tried the Mr Gasket one and couldn't get it to seal... WHAT A MESS!
went back to the canister.

Re: Spin on Oil Adapter kit??
My 283's casting # identifies it as 1957-66. So I'm guessing since it has a spin on filter that it has an adapter kit on it. I'll have to give it a good inspection when I change my oil tomorrow. My rear main seal is leaking so there is some oil back there anyway so a leak at the filter could be hidden.
For those running a kit, what filter are you running?

Re: Spin on Oil Adapter kit??
That does look like what the OP has. That does look like a good setup, better than what I've used before.

Re: Spin on Oil Adapter kit??
We have used them on a number of our truck projects and "knock on wood", no problems. We run Wix filters on all our stuff.

Re: Spin on Oil Adapter kit??

Re: Spin on Oil Adapter kit??
Mine appears to be the Fram HPK1 adapter. Can't tell you how well it seals right now since my rear main seal is leaking so bad right now it's hard to tell if there is another leak. According to the page below I'm running the wrong filter. I bought the same filter I pulled off (Fram PH8A). The only difference I see on their website is the PH8A has an outboard gasket and the PH1 & 3 have indoard gasket.

Re: Spin on Oil Adapter kit??
Well the good news is I don't think my rear main seal is leaking. It's the adapter. Go figure. It looks like it's leaking around the outer lip where it meets the block. Now I just have to figure out how to fix it. I might go back to the canister filter setup. What parts do I need to get to go back? I know I need the canister itself but would I need anything that might have been taken out to put on the adapter?

Re: Spin on Oil Adapter kit??
I would look at the sealing ring underneath the adapter first before you change back. Maybe it just needs tightening up.

Re: Spin on Oil Adapter kit??
I think your right Rich. Maybe something simple. I gotta tell ya just staring at it isn't getting me anywhere. Just not looking forward to working under the truck in an oil puddle right now (back issues). I'll give it one good effort and if that fails I'll punt. I'll put the right filter on this time too.

Re: Spin on Oil Adapter kit??
The first spin-on conversions were released before Chevy V-8s offered a spin-on from the factory. As the Ford spin-on had been available since about 1957 and was easy to find in the replacement market, that's what the early conversions used. When the Chevy filter (outboard gasket) became available, some makers redesigned their adaptors to use it, but others continued with the Ford filter because it worked perfectly well.
Further complicating matters, some GM engines other than Chevy used a spin-on (I believe the original AC number was PF-7) which looked similar to the Ford (inboard gasket), but had the same thread size as the Chevy filter. Since this one was also available before the Chevy, at least one conversion used it. Ray Last edited by raycow; 05-24-2010 at 05:23 PM. |

Re: Spin on Oil Adapter kit??
Took it apart, cleaned it real good, put it back together and torqued things nicely. Looks like mission accomplished. The seal was pretty hard but I couldn't get one locally so I ordered 3 online and reused the old one for now. The flaw of this design is that the center nipple can back out of both sides (the adapter and the filter). Mine had backed out slightly, probably when I removed the old filter. But I didn't start a new leak I just made the one that was there worse.
I'll keep a close eye on it.

Re: Spin on Oil Adapter kit??
Ya, it still runs like crap and looks like crap but it's not leaking anything at this moment so I'm a happy camper.
