87 stepside

hi all.
I am looking at a 87 step tomorrow, it has a 6 cyl auto. What tran would be in it?
Is it still carb? If I wanted to put a 383 in it carb, how hard would that be? I would think the motor mounts would need changed?

Any help is appreciated

Re: 87 stepside

If it's still stock an 87 would be 4.3 V6 wtih throttle body fuel injection, 700R4 auto overdrive. Converting to carb takes a fuel regulator, motor should drop right in, but the trans should be upgraded too!

Re: 87 stepside

OK all I got the truck. IT has a 6 cyl and 700r4 tran. The truck is in pretty good shape except the bed. Questions:

1- The above question on motor swap
2- Radiator seems small so I need to put a larger radiator in
3- good vender to get bed parts and other parts.

The engine mounts and frame stands will swap right out. You can probably find the stands from one of the several guys parting out 73-87 trucks that had a 350 pretty cheap. I also imagine the radiator will definately need upgraded like you were saying. Any pics of your truck?

Re: 87 stepside

I just bought a bunch of bed parts for my truck resto about a year ago from LMC truck. The inner bedsides, which I am betting you need being a PA truck are top notch. All hand made and excellent quality. There fenders were the same chinese stuff you can get anywhere else, so I would probably try and find some used ones somewhere if you can for that. Not sure what else you need but there are many places to find the stepper parts. Just need to hunt for them a bit.

Re: 87 stepside

I am going to try and price the body parts local to save on freight. I am thinking about replacing the drivers door. Its a little rusty but not bad. I am planning to put a 383 stroker and either a 350 tran or 700R4. Trying to decide. If anyone can help me out with some photos of wheels. I really would appreciate that. I am trying to fill the fenders. No drop yet.
