Big Brakes from GM....

With all the talk about big brakes got me thinking what "late model" GM cars/trucks cae with usable brakes. I know they won't just bolt on, but what are some good candidates for conversion material?

I was at my local tire shop yesterday and happened to see the brakes on a new H3. The size of the front caliper got my attention. It is a large 4 piston caliper on the front, and a nice looking single piston caliper with E-brake on the rear.

Hmmm, any thoughts?

I like the way you are thinking ...but did tey ever make a 2 wheeld drive?? seems you could pull the axle and use it as a hub?? then you could rape the spindle and give it to a good parts guy to find the parts to make it work??...sounds pricey though

Using 6 lug rotors on a 5 lug axle will be an expensive swap. You can't lay down a 5x5 pattern on the6 lug without going into another hole... You would have to weld up the other holes and start over... Now if you had a rotor that has similar thickness and od it could work with custom brackets

Re: Big Brakes from GM....

They did make the H3 in a 2wd, but I'm pretty sure it was 6 lug as well. Clint has done the leg work already to verify that the 6 lug rotors won't work. I do think the calipers might be of interest though. I'll try to dig deeper and find specs on them.

I was just surprised when I saw this as to how big that front caliper is. It appears to be larger than the one on my 09 Sierra.

Re: Big Brakes from GM....

I've done a bit of searching for OEM big brakes as well. Most of what I've found have been 6 x 5.5" wheel pattern. For those of us with 6 x 5.5" already that isn't a problem. The issue that I haven't figured out is an economical 6 x 5.5 hub for the front so as to utilize the bigger rotors on the front.

Why not use the factory 6 lug hub and spindle from the drum brakes and fab a custom bracket to bolt to the spindle? I now that would not help those wanting the 5x5 pattern, but it is a start??

Re: Big Brakes from GM....

have you found a 6 x 5.5 rotor?? tracing it backwards should be easy....most stock spindles ( from what ever you find the big 6 on) should convert to our A arms??

as far as geting the 5x5 thats easy...most 1/2 ton truck rotors will fit..just need a good parts guy to check the diameter thickness and height...all that info is available IF you can get them to look it up in a BOOK ...my parts guy kinda digs these one off projects..I drop stuff off tell him what I want to do and tell him to call me...if you want it NOW he'll tell you where to put it...he ussually calls in a couple days if nothing else to tell me to stop being a cheap...... and come get my crap..some stuff is just aftermarket

Re: Big Brakes from GM....

Isn't the H3 on a Trailblazer frame? The rear brakes look suspiciously like 99-up Silverado rear disc brakes, very similar. Not sure about the fronts, though.

Yes, the H3 is a 'cloaked' Trailblazer.

Building a small, high rpm engine with the perfect bore, stroke and rod ratio is very impressive.
