Tailgate band dent removal

Any suggestions or success stories on taking minor dents out of the aluminum tailgate bands?
Cheers

Re: Tailgate band dent removal

I would assume sticking it in a vise protected by foam and applying pressure to return it the the original shape. however i've never been able to find a tailgate band.

Re: Tailgate band dent removal

Mine has a small dent in it, I'm not too worried about it. Paintless dent removal guys do magic on cars beat to hell by hail. I've been through that. I think I can do a good enough job on a driver by working a spoon on the backside while holding something flat on the frontside.

If you need perfection, find a local paintless dent removal guy to fix it for you. They usually charge $40 or so per dent but you may be able to work a deal if you take it off and take it to him, it'll make his job much easier.

Biggest problem is going to be gaining access to the dent. If it's in the middle area, there is a backing plate that covers that part up.

Does the backing plate serve any good purpose? I'm just curious if it can be removed if need be.

Re: Tailgate band dent removal

it's how the band is mounted....I was looking at one the other day, and I think you can bend some tabs and remove the backing plate, and then reinstall it

The back hides, so a hole could be drilled for access by a PDR tech. With it being fairly thin aluminum, not sure how well it would PDR to be honest, but would well be worth the try. Lord knows I'm going to make my PDR guy fix a big dent in the molding on the back of my cab.
