What's the point?!

I have a problem. I love my 67...but i also love driving my 67! In order to insure my truck properly i need to get collector insurance of some kind, The problem with all the collector's insurance out there is that the vehicle can only be driven "occasionally" to auto shows, club outing, and things of that nature. Well what's the point of having a truck that you love to drive, if you can't drive it. Right now I have full coverage on my truck, but if it gets stolen, totaled or whatever, I'm only covered for the blue book value of the truck. And I think we all know, that Kelly has his head up his rear when it comes to TRUE value of our beautiful pieces of American Ingenuity! Does anyone have any suggestions for what i can do to properly insure my truck for the real value, AND still be able to drive it like i love? I'd appreciate any help i can find on this. Thanks!

Don't know about where you are but, here, declared value insurance is available. The vehicle is appraised and the rates are adjusted accordingly.

My father-in-law has stated value coverage through his regular insurance company (State Farm I think) and there are no restrictions on how much he drives the vehicle.

Like cdowns mentioned, the best thing to do is talk with an insurance agent face to face.

I know that is how my father-in-law insures his vehicles. He has a Dodge Shelby something or other insured at 15k with unlimited miles per year if I remember correctly. I think he only pays 3-400 for the year of coverage. Don't know who it is with though.

I have my burb insured through Allied Insurance, and it is insured for the value of a new Suburban. Any more, they wanted an appraisal.

I dont know if these companies will work for you but they advertise alot on the different car shows on TV. The companies are Hagarty Insurance and Grundy Insurance. Fromwhat the ads say they specialize in classic car ( and I would assume truck ) insurance.

We are lucky in Saskatchewan with our government insurance. It cost me $55.00 a month with no restrictions to insure my truck. That also includes fire, theft etc. when it is in storage for the Winter. If I do not license the truck and just leave it in storage it cost me 15.00 per month.

As far as what its worth if it gets wrote off they calculate that on a truck to truck basis. With that being said sometimes you have to fight them hard.

Be careful with "declared", "stated", or "agreed" value insurances. In many cases these policies only use the stated figure for rate purposes. If you have a loss they will only cover the vehicle up to book value or the stated value whichever is lower. Typically agreed value policies are better. If you don't have to show an appraisal, it may not cover what you think it does. Be sure to read the policy totally and make sure you fully understand it. I am an insurance adjuster, and I hate to see anyone not get what they thought they were bargaining for.

I have a '66 mustang insured for the appraised value through State Farm, and I don't have any problems. Ask your agent where you can find someone to do an appraisal for you. Mine only cost about $100-$150. My rates are relatively cheap, too.

Haggerty $320 per yr.

Grundy $225 per yr.

Barrett Jackson $232 per yr.

American Collector $908 per yr.

State Farm $650 per year

BILL72 Talked to the first 4 you listed within the last month. Hagerty was not the cheapest but seemed to be the best value to me. No mileage restrictions, (although it is not to be used as a daily driver). I asked if I wanted to take a road trip, even drive cross country would it be a problem? They said no. I asked if my kids could drive it, (all under age 25). They said yes, that's how kids get involved in the hobby. (Future business). Their claims department is in-house, not farmed out.

Now in some cases, that is great my 71 SWB 4x4, NADA value is between 15-30k! I don't have nearly that in it, so i would be ahead. But in the case of my 70 Nova, I've have more in it than it books for, so I would be screwed. It is very much worth the collector insurance. I've had a claim with Hagerty on our old show truck, they paid what was needed, no questions asked!

I agree. Many times I have seen it where the agent didn't even fully understand what was covered. Be sure to read the policy and get a policy that requires an appraisal. Those are the best for classics.

I have used Hagarty for the last 8 years on a 68 GTO that I used to have and my 72 Sprint that my son drives and now on my 67 C10, they have always been easy to work with never had a claim but I have up coverages on my car or changed things on my polices with no problem them I am happy with them.
