Smile Refinish wooden bed

I need some help picking the correct products to refinish my wooden bed. I would like to do it once and have it last. My truck is always parked in my shop. I will be using polished stainless to hold the planks down.

Do I need to go to a boat shop to get a marine product? Do I use shlack, polyurethane, or what?

I have seen some of you guys beds and they look great. I would like mine to come out like that.

Thanks,
Guy

Re: Refinish wooden bed

I've restored a couple of antique boats. For the deepest smoothest finish use a bristle brush and a good grade of marine varnish like Epiphanes or Pettit Captain's 1015. It will take 7 - 10 coats to have a furniture like finish, sanding with 320 and tacking off between each coat.
This is a pic of the 52 Chris I did. Currently working on a 56 Lyman

Re: Refinish wooden bed

That's a beautiful boat. My aunt had one about that year, except the decks were white. My wonderful older brother wrecked it when he was drunk. For a good idea as to what materials to use, check out MAR-K's web site - they have a test on there that they compared the different materials. If you want the least maintenance material, then paint the boards, which is what I did.

Re: Refinish wooden bed

the important part is to do the whole board the sides ends and bottoms too// a good bristle brush is very important expect to pay in the $20 range for a high quality brush//thin well the first couple of coats to get deep penetration// dont try and rush make sure each coat is fully dried

Re: Refinish wooden bed

cdowns is 100% correct, no matter what brand of material you choose.

I would test-fit the whole thing before finishing too. You don't want to have to do any cutting/drilling or fitting of any kind on your finished boards. It "breaks" the seal you have just created.

Thank all of you for your responces.

I think I will go to a boat shop and get a good brush and marine varnish.

I like the help I get from this site, it gives me the confidence to go on and tackel the things I've always wanted to do.

Beautiful boat by the way!
