I was prospecting a new Tahoe around 2005, before the economy went on vacation, and after seeing the average cost for a well-equipped truck, I decided to invest in a few nice 4-5-6 Chevy trucks and drive the Tahoe I already owned. Five years later, the Tahoe has almost 200K on it and I have a few real nice 4-5-6 Chevy trucks, that I was able to save from the auction block.

I agreee, I would rather have 4-5 very nice 4-5-6 Chevy trucks, than drop a cool $100K on a '65 Chevy C10 resto-mod.

I like the way you think....if I had a $100k truck, i'd be worried about it all the time...it's bad enough to worry about a $10-20k truck (which i don't have, lol)...but if I were Richard Childress, i don't guess i'd worry too much (since i could just fork out the $$$ to build another) if anything happened to it

They had $144,000 in the truck and it sold for $104,500... so Childress only lost about 40 grand

I find this all very interesting but in reality it is all crazy to me. 3500 hours... lets see if I spend 6 hours a week working on my truck then in about 11 years from now it will be done.

I guess somebody has to raise the bar. But then again all this talk of a $100,000 truck makes my "big decision" as to if I should spend a couple hundred bucks on a set of gauges for my old heap now seem like chump change in comparison.

A local custom rod builder is doing a '61 Chevy C10 swb fleetside truck for a customer. They scraped the '61 frame, due to rust, but instead of putting a custom rear half or front half or both, they put a stock '69 swb C10 frame under it. It has a bbc/700R4. The build is over $60K.

Using the best original rust-free or NOS sheet metal and hi-po running gear with all the bells and whistles, I don't think I could spend $40K...on the high side. I would like to have a few customers a year, like that.

3,500 man hours @ $35.00 per hour is $122,500.00, so I am not sure how they came up with that many man hours. I am sure a shop that is building a project for Richard Childress is not working for $35.00 per hour and is certainly not charging that as a shop rate. Something is not adding up.

The 3500 hours includes the time at Richards shop building the chassis and engine......Maybe that cost wasn't figured in.......I'm sure if the truth was known, he probably had alot more than that in it.

About the hours not equating...they could have said we will build the truck for 75K+ materials and you give us the publicity for it...

These are prices I have seen within the last 12 months for '60-'66 Chevy/GMC NOS parts:

NOS pair of front fenders - $1,300.00
NOS hood - $1,200.00
NOS pair of swb fleetside bed sides - $1,200.00
NOS fleetside tailgate - $550.00
NOS pair of inner fenders - $200.00
NOS grille support - $375.00

Rust-free, dent-free big back window, low hump cab, that I bought and sold - $1,200.00

For roughly $6K for the major sheet metal items.

All other sheet metal, including cowl extensions, windshield cowl, radiator support, inner door panels, cross sills, wheel tubs, front bed panel, frame and all factory specialty items, can be purchased in good, used condition and refurbished for very reasonable.

A great deal of time, effort and supplies is put into the prep and finish on a project of this magnitude, so working with good, quality sheet metal to begin with is vital to controlling the costs for the bodywork & paint. It is foolish to sink hundreds of hours in shop time on marginal sheet metal, when there is good, take-off sheet metal available, as well as, NOS parts for a fraction of the costs of the cumulative labor dollars.

A local shop passed on an excellent swb fleetside bed for $1,100.00, because they had 12 man hours per bed side at $85.00 per hour, to repair the customer's bed sides, not including the front panel, wheel tubs and tailgate. They put $1,020.00 in labor per bed side x two bed sides or $2,040.00, just because they needed to keep the shop busy. Those types of things add up quickly on a project, especially when the build cost is north of $144K.

sorry, wasn't trying to start an argument....and was thinking about the 67-72 NOS stuff...not the proper 60-66 like this truck (Ex. I"ve seen one bedside sell for 2K)

I guess I also was thinking about NOS for the whole project. When you add up things like $1000 NOS grilles and tailgates, and all the hundreds of $50 NOS parts it adds up FAST> THe project I bought had a small box worth of NOS parts that are worth around 600 together.

And on pulley sets I was thinking March or Billet specialties and I see a lot of guys here running the whole setups that start at 2,500...

Again, not trying to argue...just explaining what I was meaning and how I was mistaken thinking of 67-72 NOS stuff...

I just saw March 2010 Street Trucks Mag. There is another article on this truck. According to that article they spent $165,000 on the truck. That's just absurd.

if i had childress money id probably have alot of expensive toys as well. but like everyone has said i cant even imagine spending that kind of money mainly because i have never been in that financial posistion and more than likely never will. so i think iwill just be thankful for what i have. that is one beautiful truck though.

I'm glad he spent it. I hope he keeps spending it. I work for the wealthy all the time. They make money in their sleep on investments they made many years ago. If some of them stopped working today, they'll still make money till the day they die. They'd rather spend it on something that they wanted, than die with too much money in the bank. It'll get taxed like crazy before their kids get it anyway when they do die. I'd rather him put a good shop to work than have it pile up in the bank or worse, buy some Italian thing that anyone with money can write a chack for. This truck is appreciated by everyone that sees it. And it's the only one like it.........but DANG that's a lot of cash!!!

good point, also the nice thing about these high caliber builds is that they set the bar high, and also show us trick stuff that can be done!
alot of us will put 3500 hours into a truck and get something just as nice, the difference being is that our time dosen't cost as much to us...

The problem is.....as with most of these high end builds, he/we will need to spend $104,500 building it to fetch it back.

Not a fan of Barrett Jackson. Sure you get to see some really rare cars and trucks, but from where I see they are part of the reason the classic auto industry is so obnoxiously over priced. I was thrilled to find the price of the early 60's Chevy trucks and resto parts to be a lot closer to realistic prices, and I hope to have mine completed before those prices are driven through the roof. At least I've managed to get my Chevy pickup and my Camaro (10 years ago) before the prices when obsurd. Too bad I didn't do that with a 71-72 Chevelle years ago, now thanks to B.J. and many others, I will be paying out the rear when I go buy and build that project.
