final.
Still dont know what engine this is but it looks like the valve covers were painted black at one time. Are they supposed to be held on with Phillips head screws?

It is a 305E, and yes the valve cover bolts were phillips head.

Re: v6 GMC information needed
How about a paint question on this truck. It looks like white was the origional paint as its on the fire wall and underside of hood. But the parting line on the cab interior looks like an aftermarket paint job.
I read somewhere that this color interior was standard for 67 GMC's. Is this true? IF so I can understand the parting line but it woudl seem they would have hit it at the weather striping.

Re: v6 GMC information needed
305E not a problem to me. I am going to try to get it running in a couple of weekends. Will have to clean it up good before I park in my neighborhood. It stinks living with a HOA. I Saw those phillips head screws and thought WTH!!! Figured the PO had done it when he could't find the bolts.

There's nothing wrong with the 305. Still a very cool old engine. They freak people out that think they know about old trucks. Most people only know about L6's and V8's, but the big V6's makes a lot of folks scratch their heads.

Re: v6 GMC information needed
Thanks for the pics. Looks liek this one has had a paint job somewhere down the line. Enough of one to paint the firewall and behind the cab. I'm sure I'll find out more as I dig into it.
Not upset at all about the 305 I like that its the V6.

Re: v6 GMC information needed
The 305's used the smaller Stromberg WW 2bbl. carburetor, the 351E's used the large Stromberg WWC, a bit similar to what was used on some Mopar big blocks in the mid-60's. Thing is a few '69 305E's did come with Rochester 2G's. The Rochester 2G will interchange with the Stromberg WW without too much trouble. Maybe someone installed a 2G off a Chevy small block on that truck or it could be a carb. off a '69 305E. In any event, I would prefer a 2G over the stock Stromberg. I run a 2bbl. 500 cfm. Holley on my 351E.

The guy I tried to buy it from first kept calling it a 69? Perhaps it ahs a 67 Front clip and bed? Could explain the repaint look of the cab? But this is a small back window cab so it could not be a 69 or could it? Would you know what clue in the VIN would tell me 67 or 69?

Re: v6 GMC information needed
1) Why would gmc use an outside supplier instead of rochester? Unless gm also owned stromberg? (note: i know nothing about stromberg).
2) What does the "E" designation stand for? |

Re: v6 GMC information needed
Small back window is '67, period. It also has '67 rims and hubcaps, no marker lights, ect.. GM used other carburetors besides Rochesters from time to time. As I said, the GMC V-6's almost always used Strombergs right up until 1974, when they quit making them for the medium and heavy trucks. The V-6's used a letter suffix to denote specific engine models. For instance, the '60-'61 light duty trucks used the 305A, which had a Holley 1bbl. carburetor. The 306B was an early 2bbl. used on medium trucks. A 351C was used on medium trucks and had a 2bbl. Stromberg with small valve heads. M stood for Magnum (and GMC called their high performance engines 'Magnums' 2 years before Dodge did!). Magnum ment the engine had the large valve heads and the bigger Stromberg WWC carburetor. There were 351, 401, 432, and 478 Magnums. The 351E was a Magnum used in pickup trucks. The 305E was a light duty 305 for pickup trucks as well.

Re: v6 GMC information needed
Perhaps the engine could be a '69, but the rest of the truck is pure 1967. The small back window was ONLY available in '67 in light duty trucks. The other things that point to '67 are: 1). the E-brake handle, 2). the small letter tailgate, 3). no SPID on glovebox door and 4). no side markers on front fenders or pickup box.

If I get the time this weekend I'm going to drain the gas, Change the oil, pop out the plugs and squirt some light oil into the cylinders. Turn it over by hand a few more times and perhaps put a hot battery and see if she starts. Should I try to pre-lube the engine? Also, earlier in thread someone mentioned Napa for parts. Is there a standard Oil Filter for this engine that I could walk in and grab? Thanks, THomas

Re: v6 GMC information needed
they don't like it...but I rev'd my '64 305 tight as I could before I'd make the jump from 1st to 2nd on the old 3 on the tree...and pop the clutch to get a 2nd gear scratch. When I sold the truck a year later it was still running but had finally thrown a rod, spun a bearing or something (it had been using oil but not "smoking")... and the buyer still drove it the 10-12 mile trip back to his house.
If course I was 15 then...16 when I sold it. LOL!

Yes, NAPA should be able to supply you with an oil filter without any problems. FYI; the same oil filter is used on a later model Buick or Olds. I just can't recall which Buick or Olds that is. Jeeeez, gettin' old sucks...

Re: v6 GMC information needed
Like earlier posts, this is not a street rod engine, it is a truck engine designed for long service in tough work. This 305 V6 needed an exhaust valve at 247,000. After repair went 263,000 miles. Then company felt it was time for a new engine. GMC engineers bought the engine back and gave the company a new short block.GMC inspected the engine and found it had very little wear at 263,000 miles.

Some things have come up and I'll post this truck up for sale today.
Shame to let it go but I'm sure someone can really use this right now. Thanks, Thomas
