Disc Brake Conversion?

We ordered a kit from Classicparts for 1970 half ton last night. Typically besides the parts included in the kit what is required to finish the conversion? Our truck has power brakes if it matters. Will the stock master cylinder be O.K.?

Re: Disc Brake Conversion?

If the kit doesn't include a disc/drum MC you are going to need one. You MAY need a proportioning valve, but try it without first. If the rears lock up too easily (and the fronts don't) that's the sign that you need a PV.

I don't know what else isn't in the kit. Does it include hoses?

Re: Disc Brake Conversion?

You probably want to check the Ball joints and the rest of the steering and suspension.During the swap is the time to replace bushings tie rod ends and such.No sense in tearing into it later to do that stuff.

Smile Re: Disc Brake Conversion?

Thanks for the replies. Here is a link to the kit we bought.
http://www.classicparts.com/1963-70-...info/71-978S6/
It has hoses, balljoints, tierods, calipers, rotors, bearings, and what not. We went ahead and ordered upper and lower A-arm bushings with spacers. I think with the kit and said parts the front suspension should be almost like new. Thats my goal anyway. Will a master cylinder from a 71 with disc brakes be appropriate or is there a better one for this application? If so will it bolt up to the 70's booster. Assuming the 71 master cylinder will work the proportioning valve would also?

On a side note these are my wifes trucks but I'm starting to enjoy them more and more.

Re: Disc Brake Conversion?

You need a disc brake master cylinder and porportoning valve.
The 71-72 version will work fine.
You may have to rebend or make the hard lines from the M/C to the frame.

Re: Disc Brake Conversion?

Thanks for the replys. Well we got the A-arm bushings but we are still waiting on the conversion kit. I'm going to wait until everything gets here before I begin tearing it apart. I checked at Autozone today and a new master cylinder for a 71 with disc brakes runs $35 so that isn't too bad. They don't list a proportioning valve so that will have to come from some where else.

Re: Disc Brake Conversion?

In regards to the lines that run in front of the a-arms, I am converting my 67 to 71 running gear & I dont want to use special ECE hoses forever. I have bought the brakeline hangers that the hardlines stop at & the hoses start at. I intend of bolting or welding the hangers in the 71 spot on my 67 frame so that I can run a complete 71 hardline kit.

Re: Disc Brake Conversion?

I found them at ECE.
http://www.earlyclassic.com/fullImag...Option=03-6491
They call them Brake Hose Brackets.
ECE sells the conversion hoses as well.
