The Muncie M22 car 4 speed is often referred to a the "rockcrusher". Is this what you have in your truck? If it is the original truck tranny (SM465), it is worth about $100.

Re: Need a lil info on a rockcruser 4'speed trans

Are you sure you are not confusing "rock crawler" -what the stock SM465 truck transmission is often used in with a muncie M22 car 4 speed which has straight cut gears and is called a "rock crusher"? It is a much smaller transmission and has an aluminum case. The truck tranny is often used in off-roading and rock crawling as it is very strong, has a cast iron case, and a very low 1st gear. They go, as CDOWNS has said, for not much money. If it is the car transmission (it would have a shifter on it which is attached to the left side of the tail shaft and you would be able to see the shift linkage rods along side the transmission) it would be worth some good money. If your shifter is tall and comes out of the top of the transmission, it is the stock truck 4 speed.

Re: Need a lil info on a rockcruser 4'speed trans

Given that it is a true M-22 then it sounds like you already know what it may be worth. Personally, I don't like them. They were geared for road racing (late '60's trans am circuit). I had one for awhile in a 67 Camaro and replaced it. It's value would be to a period correct restoration project.

Re: Need a lil info on a rockcruser 4'speed trans

You can buy new ones for about 1800 with no core
http://www.tbtrans.com/muncie_4_speed.htm#new_unit
Obviously someone with a need for a correctly dated transmission for their restore would probably spend more than that for an old one.

I agree. Not a very practical transmission for normal driving, but they are definitely worth major $ to someone doing a stock resto.

First you need to be sure of what you are looking at. Not all Muncies are the M22 Rock Crusher.

Re: Need a lil info on a rockcruser 4'speed trans

Apples to oranges there. A Muncie, especially a M-22 is nothing like a Saginaw, price wise or other. The only way to know what it is , is pull the side cover, and look at gear angle. The case could be marked as an original M-22, but with the influx of gearsets available in the aftermarket, there is no telling what you have till you pull it and look inside. On side of transmission, it should have P and a date code, then A,B or C. (If it is a 1968 or later transmission). A=M-20, B=M-21, C=M-22. This was the original coding for the transmissions.

Saginaw transmissions used to be $25 to $50 each, and lasted usually a week to a month. The comparable Muncie would bring $200-300, and lasted till you hooked up the tires good. The prices for Muncies have climbed to $300-500 for a good used, and $700-900 for a used M-22(depending on internal condition). Rebuilt ones are considerably more. Last M-22 I had, I bought for $600, sold for $800, and the guy put a kit in it, with new brass, and it sold for $1400. That was almost 10 years ago.

Re: Need a lil info on a rockcruser 4'speed trans

The saginaw trans was pretty common and alot of the models used in vegas and such have found their way into larger cars and trucks. Long and short, not as common as they used to be simply because they break, especially if you horse them around. the mincie on the other hand -m21 or m22 is pretty desireable. Had a 22 several years ago and as stated earlier not so good on the street, sold it and replaced with TCI 400 th with reverse manual valve body and brake.

Re: Need a lil info on a rockcruser 4'speed trans

I can tell you I have blown up muncies, M-21's and M-22's, and saginaws. When the saginaw goes it doesn't feel as bad because you can find another cheap one and go. The muncie is a different story. I had these behind a 650hp 383 stroker in a 72 rs camaro and those saginaws held up longer than the muncies for some odd reason.
