Question Pitman arm ??

Once again 1990 K2500 350 auto....

While looking for the rattle I found the idler arm bad and replaced it thought why not do the rest?? So I ordered inners and outters and a new pitman arm..They came today so I got started.. The tie rod ends were no trouble all that is ready to go back in just as soon as I get off the pitman arm that is...I thought I would be smart and I rented a pitman arm puller before I got started but I see no way of using it....

So what is the best way to remove this thing???

Do I have to pull the gear box?

If so how do I remove the inner fender??

Does anyone know off hand what size nut is on that thing??

And as always THANKS!!!!!!

Re: Pitman arm ??

Do you have a Haynes or Chilton Manual? The manual won't pull it off, but should tell you what you need and how to do it.

Aside from that bit of wisdom (LOL), somebody on here will have already done what you're trying to do and will have the hints you need.

Sorry that I don't.

Re: Pitman arm ??

Up till now I have been able to find all my info at AutoZone on line...I just can't find pitman arm listed???

I have done a search and found lots on how to tell if it is bad, not so much on how to replace it tho....

Re: Pitman arm ??

Ok so here is what I did....

For some reason I thought there were 4 bolts holding the steering gear box on so I removed the inner fender to find the fourth...Guess what there are only three...I was glad I removed the fender because I found it much easier to remove the unit and put it on the bench. Once in the shop the impact gun and the puller worked fine and then I just ran the nut down on the new pitman arm...

Anyway that is how I did it....

Re: Pitman arm ??

On the idler arm, was there any room for adjustment on yours? Reason I ask is I once did the same on a 89 IROC camaro, and there is a specific procedure for adjusting it before final tightening, (according to the HELMS factory manual) to get the angles correct. I've not done it on our trucks, and I see you have evidently read AutoZone's recommendations, so I'm asking as much for my knowledge as anything else.

Re: Pitman arm ??

I saw no way of adjusting it...The 2 bolts fit tight through the frame and then into the idler arm.. I do not remember any wiggle room.. I had installed it before with the old tie rods and pitman it just fell right into place...
