so the wifes o3 avalance with a 5.3 needs the catalytic converter replaced on bank2, and was qouted a price of 850-1100.00 for the job,where is good place to buy the assembly(do it myself) or buy the converters and save on the mark up ($), and let a shop weld them in??
give me some options guys... thanks... btw its throwing a code p0101,p0300, and a p0430 cat low system low codes..

Use gm cats. make sure its cats you need before you replace. If you have other codes make sure they are not causing the cat code to come up.

The P0101/P0300 together is a dead give away to a plugged catalytic converter because the exhuast is come back through the intake screwing up the mass air flow sensor reading(P0101). The plugged catalytic converter is making all four cylinders miss on that side (P0300). Ive had good luck using aftermarket universal catalytic converters. Catalytic converters dont get melted down for no reason, you have more fuel running through the converter than it can handle from a missfire, or leaking fuel injector, or a leaking fuel pressure regulator.

so i need to fix the cats then do a pressure check on the fuel system??

replace both of them . if your gunna do it do it right. I just went thru this, one side was replaced then the other side went bad. so do em both at the same time. Listen to bighaas, he is the one that helped me alot when I was working an the 02 yukon.

go to gm and get it the cat from gm is about 800 buxs last one i bought for work it had both cats and o2 sensors in it already its a compete down pipe

Catalytic converters are not a wear item unless you have too much fuel or they get poisoned by lead,oil or antifreeze. Check the fuel pressure regulator first for fuel in the vacuum line.

Why are GM cats so much better? Aftermarket weld-on cats will work just as good.

I recommend using the gm cats, because too many times I have had customers go and have cheap aftermarket cats put in, only to have p0420 codes come back. I'm not saying that an aftermarket cat won't work, however with as many times as I have had to replace aftermarkets with gm ones to remedy the issue, just save the chance of having to do it twice and put ones in that you know will work. If you are going to put an aftermarket one in, I recommend the best quality one you can get. I have found out that the reason the code comes back with an aftermarket cat is not that it doesn't clean the tailpipe emmisions, they do... however they don't do it quite the same as what the gm originals do. It has something to do with the metal and chemical makeup of the aftermaket cat not being the same as the gm. Some aftermarkets will work just fine but since I know I won't have any problems with the gm ones those are the ones I use

btw all factory install cats have an 8year 80,000 mile warranty man dated by the federal govment. cline i've installed after market weld ins from napa, advance, and carquest. and on these trucks it and i have most of them come back and i have eating one gm cat due to an upset customer

I ordered my cats for 2000 silverado off summit racing they were 350 (cheapest i found) fast delivery and installed with no problems

browns recycling out of alabama factory rebuilt cats awesome prices should be able to get them 3-400 to you door

The magnaflow cat assembly is around $400 at the parts house and installs easily. I see no reason to use GM parts unless they are price competitive.
