The stump that broke the truck.

I was tearing out some bushes that I hated in front of my house and broke my 97 K1500 4x4.

I had the truck in 4 low and heard a pop. I took it into my mechanic and they think I have a bearing or something going out in the front differential. The axle shaft coming out of the pumpkin going to the passenger side does have a little play. The truck makes a nasty grinding sound at all speeds but it gets bad above 60.

My mechanic won't touch it and he recommended another shop. He said that most people crap their pants when they hear how much it costs.

My buddy is capable of doing it but we need to figure out exactly what the problem is to see if I want to fix it now or just get another truck.

Re: The stump that broke the truck.

you can get a new posi carrier for under $500 and gears for another $200 maybe? Axles maybe $250-300? thats everything but the case?

...and surely it doesn't need everything.

Heck, Just buy a junk yard front end. The housing and all. There are a ton that will bolt right in, and probably could be had for under $500

Re: The stump that broke the truck.

I just talked to my neighbor who did the same thing on his 92 k2500 and he said it was a pain. He broke 3 sockets trying to get it out.

I think what I have is a bad bearing/bushing where the axle goes into the pumpkin. I'll need a new axle shaft and lots of prayers!

Is this really worth doing to a truck that has 210,000 miles on?

Re: The stump that broke the truck.

Sounds like an opportunity to upgrade swap to a stronger and simpler (less expensive) front diff...costs less than a new truck or, apparently, the OEM replacement front end.

Re: The stump that broke the truck.

well...I'm rebuilding my '68 with a brand new 6.0L LY6 motor, a built 200-4r w/2500 stall, and a mixture of new and rebuilt parts for the rest of the chassis. expensive yes...as expensive as replacing with a new one? no.
