We try to have (4) guys to remove and install it. The height and the weight adds to the difficulty but (4) guys can take it off or set it on without damaging anything.

My son's Blazer top is a double wall top so we have been leaving it off lately.

FOUR GUYS. PIECE OF CAKE. TAKES LESS THAN 60 SECONDS TO LIFT IT OFF, & ABOUT $9 FOR AN 18 PACK OF BUD LITE. I'VE BEEN DOING IT EVERY SPRING & FALL FOR THE LAST SEVEN YEARS.

Removing top

I've seen a couple of set ups pictured on this board. Mostly four pulleys on the ceiling, one at each corner of the top. Ropes run down to a 2X4 with eye hooks at the ends. 2X4 are of course wider than the top. Lift the top at each end, slide the 2X4's under and pull it up. I believe Pierce from Cincinnatti has a set up like this.

We used a system of setting 4 4x4 posts into the ground. Put 2 2x4's horizontal and it makes a drive through for the truck. Back in, Unbolt, 1 man lifts top up with his back and wife slides 2 2x4's in cross ways. Drive truck out and top is in the air. Does that make sense?

Junkyardjohn,

Do you drink the beer before or after you take the top off or put it back on?

Here's a picture of my top off the Blazer that I just sold a couple of weeks back. Unbolt the top from your truck and get in the truck and put your back under the top and lift first the front and then the back while you slide the 2x4 under the top. The top is heavy (approx. 400 lbs. I'm guessing). You can see in this picture where I looped the rope back around the board after I lifted it up to the ceiling. I'd say a person could tie all four of the ropes to one rope and have it go to a boat winch and it could be a one person top removal system. If you have any questions about how I did it let me know.
Robert

JIM --- THE SEQUENCE OF THE STEPS, IS VERY VERY IMPORTANT,
(1) CALL 4 BUDDIES OVER FOR A COLD BEER
(2) UNBOLT TOP
(3) AFTER BUDDIES SHOW UP --- SHOW THEM THE BEER (LIKE BAIT) BEING CAREFUL NOT TO LET ANY OF THEM OPEN ANY CANS.
(4) GET THEM TO LIFT OFF THE TOP & STORE IN A SAFE, OUT OF THE WAY PLACE, WHILE YOU SUPERVISE THE PROJECT.
(5) ENJOY REFRESHMENTS, & AFTER #15 START TALKING ABOUT SOMEONE MAKING A BEER RUN. JOHN

I took the top off by myself one time and it was no fun. I had a stack of lumber that just happened to be the same height as the blazer. I lifted it up with my back and walked it back to sit on the lumber. Robert I like your system, but I had to turn the garage into a hair salon. I think 2wd blazer has a good plan that I will have to switch to when the lumber is gone. You could set up some bottle jacks on each post and just have to lift the top off long enough to get the 2x4 under. Just trying to make it more complicated probably.

My top has those lights, but it is a single wall top. I believe the one in the picture is also. I bet the double wall is a heavy thing.

Yep - Single walled top and it was still heavy as hell. I'm not sure about the double walled tops - Never seen anything except a single walled variety.

I use the exact same method as 2wdblazer. The only word of caution I can offer when building this is to make sure the top of the 4x4 posts will clear the rear seat. If not, when you start to pull out from under the top your rear seat will catch the front 2x4's and yes, I'm speaking from experience.
Matthew

Also, I've lifted both single and double walled tops and they are both VERY heavy.
