Help diagnose my problem!
hey yall, my mom said I could have her old truck if I can fix it. Its a 1990 extended cab longbed chevy, with a GMC clip, billet grill, flowmasters, 350, auto. the motor and tranny have both been swapped in at sometime, supposedly not too long ago, we arent sure as we bought the truck used. Anyways on to the problem, the tranny is stuck in first, you can rev it as high as you like and it wont shift out of first gear, reverse works fine. What could this be? help me out please? thanks in advance!

Re: Help diagnose my problem!
What kind of trans is in it? 700R4 or 4L60E? If it is a 700R4 there will be a cable running from your throttle plate down to the trans.

Re: Help diagnose my problem!
Does the cable move freely? If it does then you have other problems another trans might be in order. The 700's are easy to diagnose if that cable is messed up no shift unless the trans is blown.

Re: Help diagnose my problem!
im sure it does, ill go check. we've had problems with the governor before, could this be a possibility for the tranny not to shift? a bad governor?

Re: Help diagnose my problem!
Okay, let me see if I understand the BIG PICTURE.....your mom is GIVING you the truck, right? All you have to do it FIX it. So, let's see.....Oh, I'd get the transmission overhauled and drive it if everything else is working. You'd probably have $2K in the gearbox, which equates to a cheap ride.
This way, the transmission shop would be doing the diagnosis and the repairs and you'd have a warranty. Win-Win deal.

Re: Help diagnose my problem!
yes, that is a win win deal, main problem is that i have dont have much money, so im just checking to see if it could be something simple, such as the governor, something I could fix myself, instead of putting it in a tranny shop and dropping 2000 dollars in it when i might only need a cheap part, ya know?

Re: Help diagnose my problem!
Buy a used trans and put it in yourself. Then save up for a new trans and have the shop install the new one. Trannys arent that hard to install just get a couple of your buddys to help to some lifting thats what I did.
