Got a brand new set in my 505 from Crane Cams and I seem to have an issue with several of them oiling and then not oiling. Anybody had this problem. This REALLY irritates me, considering they are $500+ dollars.

Anybody have secret to getting these things too stay oiled or did I get a bad set????

"CRANE" hydraulic rollers???? Did they start making them again after S&S bought the name out of bankruptcy? Actually I didn't know Crane ever made lifters. I thought they were re-boxed Johnson-Controls lifters. But things change!

Are you sure it's the lifters and not the rocker arms restricting flow? Speaking totally out of my little smallblock world here, but I had a similar issue with a set of TFS roller rockers and a very high lift cam ( anything .7 is HUGE for us little SBC guys) Anyways the block had oil restrictors, and the top end oiling issue went away when I put a set of the old Crane Gold rockers on it and tossed the TFS crap. Broke a rocker is the only reason i changed them and was GLAD I didn't have to pull the motor and remove the restrictors.

Just something to think about.

I've had CompCam hyd rollers in my daily driver Burban 400sbc for 20K? miles, no problem. i'm only running a tiny .52 lift though.
what kinda springs/lift ya running?
could spring pressure be the issue?
i've had reg hyd lifters toasted due to excessive spring psi.

Cranes name is back. I dont know who is actually making them. I am running 688 lift and no more than 130lbs of spring pressure. It is a hyd cam so spring pressure isnt the culprit. Motor has been running great until last night, it started missing on number 5 and 7. Pulled the valvecovers and found intake lifters were not oiling. Had one on number 6 stop and then start again. I have Comp cams Pro magnum rocker arms. I am pretty sure it is the lifters because I have two cold running cylinders with good spark and slight fuel on the plugs. If I dont have oil at the top of the pushrods, then my valves cant be fully opening right???? I have a 30* difference in exhaust temps from cylinders 1 thru 7.

If I have to replace them. I am looking at either Lunati or Howards. Which do you guys perfer? Never used Howards personally, but I hear great things about them. They are American Made out of OshKosh, WI.

I would get a set of the Morel type lifters from Lunati, just my preference. Howards makes great lifters too though. I can hook you up with a guy who would take care of you if you want though. Just let me know. He's a valvetrain guru. As far as your lifter not oiling, I'm not sure, but you could have just gotten a bad set. I'll ask a few guys and see if they might know and get back to you on this Asap.

I called about warranty. Deaf Ears on the other end of the phone line. Want me too pull them so they can have them torn down and inspected. AT LEAST 90 days for answer... NOT! Just wont buy from them ever again and will tell my story every chance I get.

Lunati and Howards look very similar except the Howards are beefier around the rollers and are rated to 300 rpms more. Which would help with my RPM band.

Cam is solid to 6500rpms. The Lunati's are rated to 6200 and the Howard's are to 6500. Granted it wont live around 6500, but I like to know in the back of my mind that I have the parts to take it. My short block is built for 1200hp, but changed my mind about twin turbo build about 8 months ago and just wanted a 600 to 700hp reliable street motor. I am planning on adding a 150 to 250 shot after some street miles are put on the motor. I am kinda paranoid with this early failure.

"Solid" as in STRONG to 6500 rpms. Slang term on my part.

You can run solid roller lifters on a hydro roller FYI.

But I would have to change my springs, pushrods, and adjust the valves all the time. Love the simplicity of the hyd lifter and low maintaintence. If this truck was more "strip" than "street" I would have gone solid.

Leaning toward Howard's lifters. Beefier around the cup and plunger and around the roller tip.
