99 vortec 350- wont start- lost

60#s fuel pressure on the rail at the test port.
replaced pressure control regulator,plugs,wires,rotor,cap.
Started out hard to start after the engine cooled, but would start and run great as long as the engine was hot. Never a miss or stall. Now it wont start @ all. I am getting fire. pulled #1 plug to see. Has to be fuel.......am I missing something?

I thought it might be the coil or module, but ruled that out. Plenty of fire to the plugs.

Re: 99 vortec 350- wont start- lost

Fuel pressure is good, but do the plugs smell like the injectors are firing? I can only think of two things that will keep the injectors from firing on this engine, Crankshaft sensor (Computer doesn't see the crank spinning) or bad ignition module. I just went through this with a friend over the phone and then at his house. Same issue, crank with no start. Fuel pressure was good, he was seeing fire at the plugs and cap/rotor/wires good. I had him pull a plug and check for gas smell and nothing. I told him the same thing, crank sensor or ign module. I recommended taking the module off and having it tested, instead he just bought a new one from Azone (strike one) installed it and still nothing. He then went and bought a crank sensor from Azone (stirke two). He then went back to them for some "Expert advice" and ended up with a cap and rotor (stirke THREE). I went out there and took a spare module I had and guess what, it started right up. We took all the new stuff back as they told him they would take it back if it didn't work ???? but they did and we went to Oreilly and got a AC Delco module and he went ahead and got AC plugs, wires, cap and rotor and a Wix fuel filter just for good measure, the other stuff only had 234k on them.

Re: 99 vortec 350- wont start- lost

Thanks bwood.

The plugs are not getting any fuel at all. I "thought" the ignition module regulated spark.

I was wondering what part regulated when the injectors were supposed to "fire" it has to be an electrical component since they have wires going to them.

When I can isolate this part I "think" i will be better off.

Re: 99 vortec 350- wont start- lost

you sure that its good? a buddy has a similar CPI setup and the "spider" is known to be a problem part. CSFI looks like it is engineered similarly.

Re: 99 vortec 350- wont start- lost

60 psi is low for cranking. Even though bwood is correct the spec is 60-66 psi but cranking can require at least 63 psi on high milage poppet nozzles. Try spraying a little carb cleaner in the intake if it starts & runs good try clamping off the return line (pinch the rubber return line under the truck, its the 5/16" line not the 3/8"). Fuel pressure should max out at 80-100psi. If it does not the fuel pump is weak.

FUEL PUMP. THe CPI have a valve and you need like 66+ psi for the valve to open and let fuel pass. Dont forget to put a new filter on it too!

Thanks.

Looks like I will be changing the fuel pump next. I had rather be working under the hood or rebuilding a tranny.
LOL
but gotta do what you gotta do.

Re: 99 vortec 350- wont start- lost

I had the same problem with my 99 Yukon. CPFi vortec 350. I would get intermitent start/ stall problems. Replace the fuel pump, fuel regulator, spider, full tune up, ignition module, coil. Come to find out after being stuck 300 miles from home and it taking an hour to get the truck started. I took it to the dealer and they had to replace my Passlock2 sensor and module. Never har a problem with the truck not starting again.
You may want to check youd distributor also. They just told me mine was worn out and the shaft. Just my$0.02
