Question Rear disk brake question

Alright, I want to put disk brakes on my 12 bolt rear end but I don't want to spend the big bucks for a conversion "kit". I know I should be able to find everything I need at a junk yard and rebuild the system. I just need to know what to look for in the way of a year make and model for a donor.

Has anyone done this? What make of car or truck had disks on the rear stock that will bolt up the my axle?

Thanks everyone.

I was told this Project had a L-72 427 425HP, It did not.
It does have a 427 block and parts from various 427 motors. It will end up with a nice strong 454 in the end.
It has not been run for 20+ years

Re: Rear disk brake question

I think you are going to find that it's not going to be as easy as that....otherwise there would be no need for a "kit" in the first place.

Swapping the entire rear end out of an Expedition or one of the big-body Lincolns is probably the easiest way, but you lose the original 12 bolt that way. You still need a master cylinder/proportioning valve, etc. but there is a lot less "adapting" and bracketry involved.

I understand what you are saying but I have a very good condition 12 bolt with a set of 4.11 gears in it all setup and ready to use. I can fabricate to adapt if I need to do that, I just don't want to pay the "Kit" prices they are asking for.

I guess what I need to know is what year did GM start putting disk brakes on the back of 1/2 ton truck and can I adapt them to my 12 bolt?

you might check out captfab...he makes brackets so you can use stock calipers....this way you can buy it piece by piece as your budget allows

here's a link to most of his posts with different options that use camaro calipers, stock D52 calipers, impala ss calpers etc..

Re: Rear disk brake question

Not sure if this is an option or not, mainly because I don't know if it would work...

I had a 1979 Cadillac Fleetwood I used in a demolition derby last year that had factory rear disk brakes. I was going to snag them but the carnage was so severe I just never messed with grabbing them. You might be able to get a set of something like that in a junkyard. If I had grabbed them last year, I would have just given them to you for the shipping. I'm looking for another car currently. If I come across something, I'll let you have them if you can find out whether they would really work on a truck or not.
