1987 tbi...NOT GETTING FUEL

I have a 1987 4 door 3/4 ton that I an having a fuel problem with. It starts if you prime it, but dies when it runs out of fuel. I do not hear the fuel pump priming, but do hear like a small clank under the hood after the time it would take to prime, like it is trying to get fuel. I did a post search and could not find a clear anwser. The truck has been sitting about a year. I quit driving it because of this problem. I need to get this truck running before it rots away.

if i remember these have the fuel pump in the tank, take your hand or a 2x4 piece of wood or sumthing and hit the bottom of the tank while someone turns it over, probably the fuel pump itself going out. or take the main fuel line off at the tbi base and have someone crank it and see how long the fuel comes out, if at all. just my .02

First thing to check is the fuel pump relay which is probably the noise your hearing under the hood. You need to check the wiring where the relay plugs in. If you verify that your getting power headed back to tank you need to check the pump. The pumps in Gm vehicles are notorious for going bad on a regular basis.

their is a oil perssure switch on the motor that controls the the fuel pump also. if the fuel pump fuse is blown the oil pressure switch will turn on the fuel pump when it the oil pump puts out above 4psi. check fuse then check oil pressure switch on motor

Re: 1987 tbi...NOT GETTING FUEL

I changed the fuel relay. Checked the fuses. Still no go. I will change fuel pump and see what happens. It has dual tanks but of course only one works. On my 87' burb it has just one relay on the pass side firewall, my 87' crew cab has 2 relays?? whats up?

One relay for each tank. You don't want the other fuel pump running when the tank is shut off do you?
