Replacing tail gate straps with cables?

A while back I found a couple of threads on here to remove the noisy tail gate straps and replace them with more modern cables. I thought I had bookmarked the threads, but I guess I did not and now I can't seem to find them. Anyone have a link to a good write up or two? I know one guy used Dakota cables, and another one used S-10. Any help is appreciated.

Re: Replacing tail gate straps with cables?

I don't remember the threads but a couple of years ago I replaced mine. The bed is a 90 sportside. I googled tailgate cables and found one by length of the cable. Sorry, I don't remember the supplier. I think it was for an S 10. Ground off the old mounting stud on the tailgate latch and reinstalled the new ones with a bolt, nut, and washer. See pics. Hope this helps.

Re: Replacing tail gate straps with cables?

Thanks for the reply. I found the thread where the guy used Dakota cables and had part numbers and finished it up yesterday. It worked out great, much better than those metal straps.

Here ya go.....
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...ailgate+cables

If you go this route, you can use 3/4" long carriage bolts, instead of 1" and you wont have to grind them down like the guy that posted the thread did. Also, I didn't have to grind any of the tailgate like he did, not sure why he had to.
