Re: 388
I would stay away from a .060 in a stock sbc. 388 is a .060 over 350 with a 3.75 stroke (400) crank. Generally a .060 sbc will end up having problems.

Re: 388
I believe what he means is a production 350 block. Boring one to .060 can be risky.

Re: 388
I have a .060 block 361 sbc and besides running alittle on the warmer side 200 I've not had any problems with it and I've beat on it pretty hard. Street motor no boost or anything like that but If I was to bore one that big it would need sonic checked for wall thickness.

Re: 388
I've done two 388's. As long as you sonic check the wall thickness you're good to go.
If you're kinda worried short fill w/ hardblock. i'd say yea to $800, as long as it was assembled good. If it blows up well some of it should be usable in next one. cuz it's the heads that are the $$ part. run a windage tray.

Re: 388
A .060 over block, if done by a decent machine shop, should be fine. It just may not be good to rebuild if something goes wrong because of the large bore. For $800 with a new rotating assembly and a clean block is a decent deal. As others have said as long as it was done by a decent shop and assembled correctly then you should have a good short block that can last along time.

Just reading through this thread.... this sounds to me like you should consider how much the friendship is worth. If HE built it and didn't know if it was a 3.75" stroker crank or not... woah,, scary!!! Kile Wild83 said, 'IF' it was built by a reputable shop,, would be a hell of a deal. But if I'm reading right it's a pile of parts you friend has pieced together in his back yard and is not totally sure of what he has???? VERY concerning!

Re: 388
I have to say...it sounds to me like a bunch of stuff just assembled with no design or planning. IMHO, I'd pass.
As for the .060, if the block wasn't sonic tested and you don't have the data right in front of you on the invoice...pass. |

An Eagle kit would have matched parts and balanced parts. Perhaps the balancing could be improved, but a kit will be at a good starting point. I would need to see documentation stating that the parts are forged. 100cc domed pistons? Are you building a dragster? -18cc pistons will work MUCH better for street use. Muther Thumper? Please! All noise, no power, no economy. Any given "normal" cam can out perform a Thumper. A 388 will NEVER have a 350 crank. I would pass. There is nothing special here. Headache waiting to happen.
