Bent Frame?

Can any of you guys tell me if this is normal or is the passenger side frame bent? I have been looking at it and when I bought it the PO had bent in the pass side bumper and fender. I didn't even think to check the frame. Here is a pic of trhe front:
[IMG][/IMG]

The area in concern is right here. It seems as though the curl in the frame might have been factory but it also seems to be bent underneath:

Not a great pic of the bottom of the frame but....

And here is my driver side (not bent)

Thank

Re: Bent Frame?

Looks to me that truck took a pretty hard hit on the passenger side.

Re: Bent Frame?

Whats the best course of action here? I didn't notice any significant pull to the side when I drove it.

Re: Bent Frame?

That curve on the top rail of the passenger side is normal, but I agree that from the pictures your frame does appear to be moved too far over to the driver's side.

Re: Bent Frame?

It is bent up under on the bottom side of the frame. If I stuck a piece of wood in there and hit the wood with a sledge would that bring me back out? Or am I better off taking her to a shop?

Re: Bent Frame?

Thanks for the pics. They do answer a lot of my questions. It is definitely bent/towed in a little too.

Re: Bent Frame?

If you've got a decent frame shop locally it's definately worth the time ,trouble & money. They can put it on a frame rack & fix it right. I think slow & steady with a hydraulic ram instead of hitting it with a bfh is the way to go. john

Not sure where you took the measurements from but, the passenger frame rail looks to be rolled under and swayed more than 1/2". Measurements on top and below frame rails will probably be different.
You would have to tie down at or behind the suspension cross member and pull the right rail over, You might be able to put a hydraulic jack (portapower) between the cross member and the end of the frame rail.

Re: Bent Frame?

I would take it to a shop. Also body panels have a better chance of lining up when the frame is correct. May run about $500 or six hundred at around $90 per hr. Many people ignore the frame then complain about the poor fit of body panels.

Re: Bent Frame?

I would say that if it rides fine and the body panels fit fine, leave it, unless you plan to road race this thing or take it above 100 mph. These trucks were never 100% even from side to side.

Re: Bent Frame?

I am not seeing a problem.

The bend upward on the top of the frame rail is normal.

If it took a hit that bad, surly there will be a crack in the frame somewhere.

Build on,
Danny

Re: Bent Frame?

Didn't say had to be cracked, just something to look for if it's in question.

I have had 2 trucks where the upright on the front cross member had been shattered on frames that otherwise looked ok.

I have also come across a frame that had a crack inside the bend of the c-channel.

39,000psi tinsel strength steel and age would crack in a high stress situation.

Tool Time lol...
When was that memorable...

Re: Bent Frame?

I had the frame straightened on mine when I first put it on the road.. It wasn't real bad, but was $250 well spent. (1997) If it's off far enough for you to passively see that it's off, you should do something about it.
